Miers has worked closely with George Bush, Karl Rove and the rest of their cabal for the past ten years. It is thus highly likely that Harriet Miers has participated in some of their impeachable criminal offenses. She may even have committed a few impeachable offenses of her own.
Once we have a Democratic majority and subpoena power, investigations of Bush's offenses -- and Miers' -- can proceed. With evidence of her participation, we can go after her. The same would not be true of a Janice Brown, Priscilla Owens or the other non-crony right wing ideologues acceptable to the anti-Miers right.
The old Alabama Republican ladies called Bush "the Texas souffle" -- pretty on the outside but full of hot air. Still, he charmed them, as he has charmed Condi, Karen and Harriet. A drunken bully is no longer so charming.
Once Bush himself is out of the picture, it may be that Miers would not be a reactionary.
Miers has long supported the provision of legal services to indigents within the ABA, not a typical conservative Republican concern.
Her active work in her church suggests she might actually practice some old-fashioned Christian virtues, such as caring for the poor, unlike her vacuous, hypercritical boss.
Her sponsorship of a feminist lecture series bespeaks a commitment to equal rights.
However, should she turn out to be unacceptable, it will be a lot easier to get rid of her than it would a non-crony appointee.
Democratic questioning of Miers at the Senate hearings should focus on setting her up for possible perjury charges at a later date. I expect she would loyally lie to protect Bush if properly questioned, she should be encouraged to do so.
