Now that we've gone South to attend the further progress of the 2004 Democratic wannabees, we should all remember Uncle Remus' fables. I read them as a child, but haven't thought about them since. Maybe it is time for a re-reading.
(With apologies for gross errors ... I last read the stories over 55 years ago.)
My memory is, in one of those stories, Br'er Rabbit pleads with Br'er Bear not to be thrown in 'that there briar patch,' No, no, no anywhere but there; oh, please. So, of course, that's exactly what Br'er Bear does.
So, to the delight of Karl Rove, the Democrats have thrown Sen Kerry into the briar patch, while having Dr Dean for dinner. Unlike the story, Sen Kerry cannot survive there. He gets rendered from limb to limb.
As a stubborn Dean supporter, I believe Democrats have been conned into double think. Maybe Br'er Fox was responsible for that. Dean was the only guy who could beat Bush; Kerry won't.
Shouldda read your Uncle Remus. I think I'm going to buy another copy and read it.
Dean has been telling us like it is, the rest aren't and won't.
I wish Gov Dean would ask for support again and make a major effort in New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona. But, it appears he won't, and that he is likely to lose his union (and other) support. Losing the southern 7 doesn't matter a lot, in the grand scheme of things, since many more convention votes are up for grabs later.
In the world of poverty, an offer of a good paying job in Las Vegas doesn't matter much, if you cannot pay for a bus ticket there. Note that the super-rich Kerry could beg a "loan" to buy that ticket, otherwise, he'd be out in the cold, too.
Without Dean, California is in play. As a Californian, that was my worst fear resulting from the "recall" debacle.
So, it looks like it is over. There won't be any changes in the Democratic party. There will be a heated election campaign, but all of the sound and fury will signify nothing. As I predicted in my last letter, George W Bush has about 85% chance of being re-elected, probably with 55% (+/- 3) of the vote.
This is all that the bozos in Washington are capable of. That's why elected Democrats have ensconced themselves in uncontested districts, leaving Republicans in charge of everything.
I think this was America's and the Democrat's last chance. If the Democratic party is unreformed, it will be time for a third party effort.
For myself, I will focus on a few hopeful Congressional campaigns, and maybe local issues, and forget the Presidency.
I urge everyone to read these very descriptive books -
Will Hutton's "A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE"
Kevin Phillip's "AMERICAN DYNASTY"
