ok, enough already.
Enough of the hand-wringing of it being 1 or 2 or 20 indictments. Enough of the fatalistic doom and gloom talk.
As Georgia10 said in her diary, it is better to have an indictment that will stick than to have many that won't stick.
But, even with this historic and monumental event, as well as what it ultimately could/should/would lead to, many here and in the left blogosphere are ready to throw out their bottles of champagne, scream "WHY???" or lose faith in Fitzgerald.
Here is the big picture point - it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Follow me, here....
There are ALOT of crimes that we think/know/assume were committed. By alot of people that are high up (and not as high up) in this administration.
Perjury, obstruction, conspiracy, Espionage Act, IIPA violations, cover ups, passing along classified information, treason - all these have been surmised and even diaried about. These are big charges, regardless of when the indictments come down, or who is indicted.
Pre-war intelligence stovepiping, forged documents, blown cover of NOC agents in the CIA, lying to the American people and Congress (and the UN and the world) - hell, everything involving Iraq - is or could be in play here.
Cheney, Libby, Rove, Wurmser, Hadley, Fleischer, even Bush himself have given conflicting information, not to mention many others.
But, it took a while, and more than a few people to turn, to get to this point. And it will take alot more to get to the bottom of it.
Remember, these are people that thought they could LIE UNDER OATH in order to sweep this away. More will turn.
rincewind had a very good comment in Georgia10's diary:
indictments are the BEGINNING of the legal process, not the end. Sure, there's already been some deal cutting, some negotiating and "cooperating"; but these are all just pre-game positioning and tail-gate-party wagering in the parking lot. Indictments == coming out of the locker room for the kick-off -- the REAL action hasn't even started yet.
These people think, and have always thought they are above the law. They have been together, or have had similar goals, for years. Think of what it took and how bad this is to have 2 of Cheney's aides flip. Think of how bad this is to have GOP bootlickers and lifers such as Novak, Matalin, Fleischer and others flip and cooperate.
There will be more.
The noose is tightening on these evil bastards. They are all scurrying to save themselves, even if it means selling out people they have worked with or been close to for years.
This is real serious, and it will take time to peel back all of the layers.
Indictments will lead to more deals, and more indictments. And more crimes uncovered. And so on and so on.
It is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't lose faith. The sky is not falling.
This is just the beginning.
