I posted this in
Ga6thDem's diary, but felt it worthy of a diary entry of my own (gotta get my 2/day out of the way).
As anyone following the news and commentary knows, the Right has been trying to spin the results of the Spanish election as indicative that the terrorists have won, with the implication being that if we follow the Spanish example and kick Bush out of the office he never earned in the first place, then we'll have given the terrorists a victory, too. The media has happily taken up this meme, as fear makes for good ratings (and horribly slanted polls, like the one on CNN, yesterday).
So what's a good progressive to do?
Turn the issue back around and throw it back in the right's face!
We can concede that the Spanish have chosen to go their own way in handling the terrorist threat, but we can also say that they've chosen to do this because George W. Bush has been an uninspiring leader. This incident proves that he is incapable of keeping our allies from jumping ship at the first sign of trouble. If we keep "staying the course", we're headed straight for rocks, as an ally-less America will either be left holding the bag of all the world's problems, or will be left empty-handed, as our allies will have formed a new coalition for combating the threat, and we will be excluded. Therefore, we need an inspiring leader, one who does not bull-headedly charge at every problem with sword drawn, but rather one who will approach the situation dynamically.
Whaddya think?
