When I was in college at the University of Alabama, I took a Women's Studies class. One Friday, our instructor mentioned that Marilyn Quayle was being paid thousands of (student activity fee) dollars to speak at the student center that very night. I was horrified that my side was not given equal time. The women's studies program organized a protest and I went.
While there, I met up with other like-minded folks who did not think it was fair that our fees were going to fund Marilyn speaking without an opposing viewpoint.
Just before Marilyn arrived, a gang of rethugs marched in. There was a woman behind me with her Bush/Quayle 1992 T-Shirt and a sign that read, "Gays, burn in hell!"
More, after the flip.
She was screaming at the top of her lungs and crowding me and I asked her to step away to allow me room to stand. She said, "my brother is a homosexual (damn, was it my sibilant "s"?) just like you and I love him but he will meet you in hell." She then HIT ME ON THE HEAD with her sign (it kinda hurt). The head of the nail (not hammered in all the way) burned my scalp. I did not bleed but I did get mad.
I snatched the sign out of her hand, broke the wooden stick off of the poster board and snapped the stick in two pieces.
A couple of weeks prior, I had gone to Birmingham to escort scared women into an abortion clinic while "Christians" protested.
It was CRAZY!
I was particularly elated (cough) when one of the so-called Christians spit right in my face. I just moved on and did my job as I was asked. That was a scary day for me.
My mother asked me not to go back because she feared I would get hurt. I reluctantly agreed after she threatened me with not sending food money for a month. Not long after that conversation with my Mom, a bomb went off at that clinic and injured several people (no one I knew).
Many republicans have been mean to us through the years. They have done so directly or indirectly.
Do you have any stories about republicans at rallies? Do you just want to say mean things about them?
Here's your chance folks. Here is your open thread for meanness.
I feel mean too!
