(rant) This kind of misinformation in headlines really annoys the h**l out of me:
IBM Raises Number of New Hires for 2004 from Reuters, via Yahoo news(http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=568&ncid=749&e=1&u=/nm/20040117/bs_n
m/tech_ibm_dc
When you read the article, which is somewhat convoluted, the total hires in the US may be 1,500...big woop! (end rant)
The article continues with the rosy information that there will be more hires here in the US than will be sent overseas. But, if you do the math, 3,000 US jobs will be moved overseas, 4,500 will be added here, for a grand total of 1,500 jobs really added, out of the 15,000 in the headline. I can only conclude that most of those 15,000 jobs are elsewhere in the world, and I'm willing to bet the US jobs are not the good, high paying ones.
I know too many people who only glance at headlines, to find articles they think they might be interested in. So, they are mislead by this headline, which is, I believe, exactly the intent. The sheeple will now perceive that the economy is adding jobs lickity split...see IBM is adding 15,000 jobs! No wonder so few really know what's going on in the world...even if the information is there in print, it's still skewed.
I think the headline should have said:
Of 15,000 New IBM Jobs, only 1,500 for the US
Then perhaps the reaction might be more appropriate and start a few thinking.
