Corzine is looking to pull one on all of us!
from BlueJersey.net (via PoliticsNJ.com):
Nia Gill [is] an outspoken progressive hero who fought off the Essex County Democratic machine to hold onto her state Senate seat just two years ago. Gill is sharp, passionate, and persuasive, and the fact that she's an African-American would make her selection that much more noteworthy.
PoliticsNJ pulled her as a wildcard, but in today's Trenton Times, Corzine mentions her as "extrordinately capable woman,"
Corzine, from The Times:
"I got a lot of practice a year ago, and the last two years, when I was running the Senate campaign committees," Corzine said. "I have to look at adding people of character and people of capacity politically, and in my own view they have to be a progressive."
He continued, "But (at the) end of the day, the person has to have the capability to serve well, be a strong voice for New Jersey and they have to have the ability to win what I would expect will be a very tough election based on what I've seen of New Jersey politics."
While not as "cool" as Sen. Springsteen, this choice makes a lot of sense. Women in NJ elected Corzine by 20 points, and I see a princibled, African-American woman representing NJ very fitting. Here is her state profile.
Also, it's great that Jon Corzine vows to appoint another progessive. I really think he'll turn out to be a great governer, and I think we'll see why with his senate pick.
