OPERATION: FALAFEL

Fri Nov 11, 2005 at 09:11:24 PM PDT

[UPDATED]: For those of you interested in participating in OPERATION: FALAFEL, I've added all of the radio stations that carry O'Reilly and have websites in the Extended Section.

[UPDATED]: O'Reilly responds to the shitstorm that swirls about him -- and of course makes himself out to be an even bigger jerk than he was before. Text of his response is in the Extended Section.

As many here and in other blogs have noted, Bill O'Reilly crossed the line by endorsing an al Qaeda terrorist attack against the United States of America.

It is time to do to Bill O'Reilly what the blogosphere successfully did to the Sinclair Broadcast Group - hit 'em in the wallet.  We must notify O'Reilly's sponsors that they are, in fact, sponsoring a radio program that has stated its support of a terrorist attack against the United States.

In the Extended Body I have contact information for the corporate sponsors of The Radio Factor, and a copy of the email that I sent them.

According to his website, his corporate sponsors are:

  • Life Quotes, Inc.
  • EmigrantDirect.com
  • Tempur-Pedic

Life Quotes, Inc. appears to be part of Quotesmith.com, Inc., which runs www.insure.com, a "comprehensive online customer insurance information service that caters to the needs of self-directed insurance shoppers."  The two contacts that I sent an email to are the Vice President of Sales, Brian Gibson <brian at lifequotes.com>, and the Executive Vice President and COO, William V. Thomas <bthoms at insure.com>.

EmigrantDirect.com is a subsidiary of Emigrants Savings Bank.  I could not find any contact information other than their main helpdesk <emigrantdirect at emigrant.com>

Tempur-Pedic is the miracle NASA mattress people.  I sent my email to them at <marketing at tempurpedic.com>

Update [2005-11-15 16:37:28 by GOPhuckYourself]:: Equifax has been removed from the list of sponsors of The Radio Factor. According to email from their Vice President of Communications:
As of October, 2005, Equifax was no longer a sponsor of Bill O'Reilly's show, The Radio Factor.
I notified Equifax that O'Reilly still lists them as a sponsor (and, in fact, has them at the top of the list of sponsors).

Here is the email that I sent:

Dear <Insert O'Reilly Sponsor Here>:

I was shocked and dismayed to hear on the November 8th edition of "The Radio Factor", the following statement made by host Bill O'Reilly:

"And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

Furthermore, I was shocked to discover that you are a sponsor of a radio program that stated its support of an al Qaeda terrorist attack against the city of San Francisco, and doubly shocked that Mr. O'Reilly would single out the Coit Tower, which was built as a memorial to firefighters and other first responders.

Mr. O'Reilly's comments only have one outcome, and they only serve one purpose - they further the terrorist's resolve against the United States and embolden them.

I am bringing this to your attention because it is public knowledge that your company sponsors this radio program, and pro-terrorist comments such as those made by Mr. O'Reilly will negatively impact your company's sales.  As a matter of principle, I for one will choose to purchase products from your competitors, until such time that you end your support of radio programs that endorse terrorist attacks against the United States of America.

Sincerely,

<Your Name Here>

This is not about censorship, but rather the protection, nay, the salvation of public discourse.  As long as O'Reilly is allowed to dissemble, lie, manipulate the truth in order to push his agenda, which we now know includes asking the terrorists to attack his enemies, America is weakened.

We must educate the sponsors of The Radio Factor what its real message is.

It is only through such action that the Media will return to its sole responsibility as the steward of public discourse - to inform the public, not to manipulate the public.

[UPDATED]: O'Reilly responds!
"I mean, look, everybody knows what’s going on there. What I said isn’t controversial. What I said needed to be said. I’m sitting here and I’m looking at a city that has absolutely no clue about what the world is. None. You know, if you had been hit on 9/11 instead of New York, believe me, you would not have voted against military recruting. Yet the left-wing, selfish, Land of Oz philosophy that the media and the city politicians have embraced out there is an absolute intellectual disgrace."

[UPDATED]: Here is the list of radio stations (with websites) that carry O'Reilly. Use the websites to find the radio stations' Sales Director, and contact him or her and let him know that you are planning on boycotting their advertisers products. Also, you can find the local advertisers from the website, and contact those advertisers and let them know that you will not support them or their products, so long as they sponsor a radio program that has publically stated that an attack on San Francisco is okay because San Francisco did not support a ballot initiative. Bill O'Reilly is welcome to his point of view, but he crossed the line this time. Let the sponsors know that it is never okay to endorse a terrorist attack against the United States, even if it is 'hyperbole':

I support this effort -- and think that advertisers will find O'Reilly's latest outrage to be so over the top that they will reconsider whether they want to advertise on his program.

they're so used to O'Reilly's bullshit they may not see this as anything new or noteworthy.

      •  Here's a list of his TV advertisers: (4.00 / 21)

Don't limit your contacts to radio sponsors. It is not the radio that gave permission for al Qaeda to attack San Francisco, it was the man (using the term loosely). The same man, with the same views appears on TV and those sponsors should be held accountable for the message they are helping to promote.

        •  Fire Bill O'Reilly (4.00 / 18)

This is a campaign that needs to be taken up across the blogoshere:

          Fire Bill O'Reilly

          •  Anyone Need More Fire In the Belly? (4.00 / 6)

O'Reilly Responds: "What I Said Isn't Controversial. What I Said Needed to Be Said."

Appearing yesterday on a conservative San Francisco radio show, Bill O'Reilly offered his first public comments since being criticized for saying he would approve of an al Qaeda terrorist attack on the California city.

O'Reilly not only stood by his comments, but claimed they "needed to be said":

"I mean, look, everybody knows what's going on there. What I said isn't controversial. What I said needed to be said. I'm sitting here and I'm looking at a city that has absolutely no clue about what the world is. None. You know, if you had been hit on 9/11 instead of New York, believe me, you would not have voted against military recruting. Yet the left-wing, selfish, Land of Oz philosophy that the media and the city politicians have embraced out there is an absolute intellectual disgrace."

Yeah he really said that shit. What a clown.

Does O'Reilly have a son or daughter, niece or nephew, he would like to volunteer for Iraq??

Or perhaps he can sponsor a recruiting expo for all the Congress' kids. Jenna and Barbara can set a good example and be the first to enlist at it.

There are men his age over there. Barring that he could unselfishly impersonate a 'journalist'. And while we're at it, why hasn't Sean Hannity or that dreadful Britt Hume volunteered. No botox treatments in Iraq? How about Geraldo? It's been awhile since we've seen his sorry ass in the ME.

IIRC, when O'Reilly was on TDS last month, he said his nephew was going to enlist soon and was eager to serve in Iraq.  Like that would get him cred for sending his kin off to die for a cause he believe in.  He refused to discuss whether he had children or not.

                  •  good point (none / 0)

I did some googling and found the ref.  I had slightly misremembered - it was when Donohue was on The O'Reilly Factor when O'Reilly said his nephew just enlisted. Comments on other blogs state that O'Reilly is an only child, so at best it would be the son of a sibling of his wife. Who knows, Bill and the purported nephew could be quite close. Still no confirmation of the claim however. Not that it's all that important anyway.

        •  Dear McNeill PPC: (4.00 / 20)

You make a damn fine product, Immodium AD, that I use to stop crap from coming out my rear end uncontrollably.  In fact, stopping crap from coming out uncontrollably is a running (no pun intended, but what the hell) theme in my life.

So in the spirit of stopping uncontrollable crap, I'm informing you that I intend to switch to one of those cheapo generic brands of crap controller until you stop sponsoring Bill O'Reilly.

Mr. O'Reilly spews crap uncontrollably every night on Fox News.  So whenever I see an ad for Immodium AD, I start to associate it with crap.  I would like to associate it with STOPPING crap, but I can't as long as you keep sponsoring that show.

Call it free speech if you will.  I'm not asking you to put him in jail or even take him off the air.  I'm just asking you to stop sponsoring his show.

I will be looking for a new car to replace my well-loved Subaru Outback next year, and right now, the diesel Passat Wagon is high on the list.  However...

It has come to my attention that your company is one of the sponsors of "The O'Reilly Factor" on FOX News. As you are no doubt aware, on his radio show, Bill O'Reilly recently said, and I quote: "And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

San Francisco is one of my favorite cities. The Coit Tower was dedicated in part to firemen and police.  And O'Reilly's call for terrorists to attack an American city just because he doesn't like them is utterly dispicable.

If Volkswagen is still sponsoring O'Reilly's disgusting behavior when I'm ready to buy a new car in a few months, I will consider it a very black mark against your company.  There are a lot of excellent wagons on the market today, and I will not buy one whose maker, however indirectly, endorses terrorist attacks.

          •  Yank radio licenses (none / 0)

Every 10 years or so radio stations have to have their licenses renewed, and it just so happens that KNEW 910 AM, O'Reilly's San Francisco station, is up right now.

The deadline for comment was November 1st, for a December 1st renewal.  Nonetheless, I recommend people contact the FCC with proof that Bill O'Reilly's statements clearly show that that radio station KNEW 910 AM is not meeting the needs of the public.  Calling for a terrorist attack of that station's city of origin is a rather clear-cut example of not meeting the public interest.

Here's a link for another attempt at taking the KNEW license away from Clear Channel, due to the Michael "Savage" (Weiner) program.

        •  How's this? (none / 0)

          Mr. Bryant;

Tempurpedic's advertising dollars have indirectly supported a call to murder Americans.

Here are the steps I personally will be taking on Wednesday 11/16 unless I hear about, or see on your web site, that you have publicly disavowed O'Reilly's call to murder Americans:

I will be calling and emailing my family and everyone in my outlook to never, ever buy one of your mattresses again. I will also ask them to email everyone they know to not buy your mattresses ever again. And please believe me that I will follow up with each and every one of them urgeing them to take action by alerting all of their freinds. I wont do a simple mass email and then forget about it. I will spend the whole week personally contacting as many of my freinds and family that I can.  I figure I might be able to reach up to a hundred of your potential customers or maybe more, to let them know Tempurpedic is continuing to indirectly support a call to murder Americans.

More importantly perhaps, I will also spend the next week contacting the top 50 largest hotel chains to see what their policy is on buying mattresses from a company that indirectly supports a call to murder Americans.

Yes, myself and millions of other Americans, are that outraged. O'Reilly's invitation for al-Qaeda to come to the US and kill Americans was over the top. You have the ability to make clear your position.

Tempurpedic - Do the right thing. Speak out forcefully on this issue now.

          Most Sincerely;

I have no links (google) and I did not check downthread for similar messages maximus mea culpa or whatever those dead Italian guys said, But I'm pissed, I would love to share 8 or 12 of the emails I have sent today but I will spare you further intrusion.

    •  My reply from Insure. (none / 0)

      Dear Sean,

Don't be shocked or amazed.  But thanks for your form letter and thanks for listening to the O'Reilly Radio Factor program back on November 8th.

We advertise and sponsor the O'Reilly factor, not because of Bill O'Reilly or his politics, but because of the large, educared radio audience that he serves.  Your thoughtful letter to us is living proof of the high quality and high involvement level of Bill's Radio Factor audience and I'm glad to hear that you were among the 350,000 smart people listening on November 8th.  In fact, we received no complaints on November 8th, the day the conversation aired!

As Bill mentioned, the San Francisco referendum to ban military recruiters from public schools who accept federal funding is an outrageous affront to all Americans who are concerned with our nation's security.  We agree with O'Reilly's point that no school district that prohibits the U.S. military from presenting the volunteer military career option should receive a dime of federal tax money and that shunning the military career option in general sets a bad example for our children, especially when one purpose of an education is to learn all sides of future career opportunities.

We should all be proud of and publicly supportive of our volunteer military at every opportunity, especially in public-funded institutions and especially in public schools.  I've been impressed with every military person I've met and certainly want my 7 young children to consider the military career opportunity option when the time comes.

Bill did not advocate any violence on November 8th but did reminded us how divisive the San Francisco referendum could become by describing a possible backlash scenario in which some Americans outside of San Francisco might not want to defend that city if it were to actually ban military recruiting in public schools.  The referendum is highly divisive - and potentially dangerous.  O'Reilly pointed out the divisive nature of the referendum and advocated no violence against anybody or any building.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write us with your thoughtful comments.

      Sincerely,

      Bob Bland, CEO

Ok I've done my part, and you get a hearty recommend as well.
  •  consider it done (4.00 / 17)

and if I could recommend this diary twice, I would. I've long thought that this was the best, most effective grassroots campaign to hit the radical media where it hurts them....the wallet.

These so-called conservatives have this outlook that says that life is sacred, which vanishes the moment life costs them money. Then life gets cheap real fast. Look at any of their arguments and you'll find their personal bank balance at the center of it. Their arguments on Social Security say "I'd starve my own grandmother for 7.65% of $88K." Their arguments on the death penalty say "I'd sooner execute a few innocents than pay to feed the guilty." Their arguments on choice, welfare and and healthcare say "I'd like a child to be born, but not fed, not cared for, not insured, if I even think their parents might possibly be lazy." Their arguments on bankruptcy are that "big creditors deserve more protection than disaster victims." These people support bankrupting our Treasury for a tax break today.

If you're O'Reilly -- life is dirt cheap, especially if you live in SF. Advertising dollars, now that's valuable.

Damn straight, hit his advertisers. Hit his wallet. Make him toxic. I'll do my part.

  •  My Letter to O'Reilly (4.00 / 29)

I wrote an email to O'Reilly.  I wanted to keep it civil, but I lost it at the last moment :)  Oh well.  Reasoning with him would be useless, so I just wanted to get his mind going.

    ============

Bill, what is wrong with you?  I mean, really.  Have you considered counselling?

I have some questions that you should answer:

Do the children who can't vote in San Francisco deserve to die?  Will there be a chapter in "The O'Reilly Factor For Kids: Part II" describing criteria by which kids can be killed in terrorist attacks?  If you're so concerned about the children, I think you should provide clear guidelines for who does and does not deserve to be massacred.

Do the adults who didn't vote deserve to die?

Do people who voted against the measure deserve to die just for living in the city?

Does anyone really deserve to die for expressing their desire to keep the military off of campus?  Can you not see how that might be a reasonable position?

If San Franciscans won't get military protection, can they have their taxes cut by the appropriate amount?

I would try to reason with you, but you seem to be too far gone.  You are a parody of yourself.  The "O'Reilly Factor" is a laughing stock, and people only watch it for the same reasons that they slow down when driving by traffic accidents.

    Sincerely,
    Trent Lucier

PS: I saw you on the Daily Show mocking Stephen Colbert for having a French last name.  On behalf of everyone with a French last name, let me say: FUCK YOU.

    •  What a total (none / 1)

      fucking asswipe that guy is.

Last year there was a Kossack whose handle I'm forgetting -- Virginia something-or-other -- who used to do a series of O'Reilly diaries  where he would sit down with a beer and popcorn and give us all a blow-by-blow account of the fucker's idiocy.  His commentary on that thing was just about the funniest thing I think I've ever seen on this site.

      •  O'Reilly (4.00 / 13)

I said on my program, if, if the Americans go in and overthrow Saddam Hussein and it's clean, he has nothing, I will apologize to the nation, and I will not trust the Bush Administration again, all right? But I'm giving my government the benefit of the doubt...

"[If Hussein] has 8,500 liters of anthrax that he's not going to give up, even though the United Nations demanded that he do that, we are doing the right thing. If he doesn't have any weapons, then we are doing the wrong thing"

        --Bill O'Reilly

I'm just spreading this quote wherever I can. This quote should come out of the mouth of every interviewer when O'Reilly goes on one of his rants about Iraq. The guy is such an idiot ...

And now he's advocating mass murder. Great. A new low in national discourse.

but I've really washed my hands of O'Reilly after his last appearance on The Daily Show. He was a total prick, hateful and immature. His behavior was especially irritating given that Jon Stewart is one of the few hosts that actually encourages a dialogue instead of just attacking the so-called "guest."

Insure.com.  The 800# @ the bottom of their website is good enough to call.  They can take a message and email it on to the proper person.  I just said I want them to discontinue the purchasing of airtime on the Bill O'Reily Show because he supports Al-Qaeda and endorsed an attack on America by Al-Qaeda.

    To whom it may concern:

I am contacting you to ask that your company discontinue advertising on Bill O'Reilly's radio show. I was very disturbed by O'Reilly's invitation to Al Queda to attack San Francisco, it's despicable and unforgivable. As someone who lost friends in the 9/11 attacks, I cannot fathom how any American could invite such tragedy onto our shores again -- least of all because a city didn't vote the way they wanted them to vote on a ballot measure.

It was an irresponsible and disgraceful thing for him to say, and a responsible American company like [company name] should not support this jerk by advertising on his show. He shouldn't even have a show. Thanks for your consideration.

    sincerely,
