What many who did not listen to Rep. Murtha's manifesto have missed is the notion that Iraq's democratisation can not be won with continued American troop presence. What doesn't fit on the news loop is the proposition that the presence of our troops makes any Iraqi democracy untenable. Murtha finally understands that Iraq is not Vietnam and we can only acheive our noblest goal: a democratic Iraq, by pulling our troops out now. Below the fold are the reasons that Iraq is not Vietnam and why withdrawl is the only Brave, Honorable and Patriotic thing to do:
- SOUTH VIETNAM WAS LEFT TO DEFEND ITSELF AGAINST A VIABLE, COHESIVE AND WELL MOTIVATED ENEMY. The Insurgency in Iraq is a disjointed blend of patriotic and criminal elements with no logistical base held together with the common goal of ridding Mesopotamia of an infidel invader. With the removal of the invader this dubious band of brothers is left with a terror campaign against no common enemy and would likely turn against itself.
- SOUTH VIETNAM WAS A PUPPET GOVERNMENT WITH NO NATIONAL MANDATE FOR RULE VS. A COHESIVE VISION OF A UNITED NATION. For all of its shortcomings our occupation has resulted in a democratically elected government with a higher voter turnout than experienced in the USA in generations. The legitimacy of these elections has been argued (as they always are) but the fact that the elected body is largely anti-occupation lends a lot of gravitas to this election process. The Insurgency offers no cohesive, unifing nationalistic goal. With the removal of the invader this dubious band of brothers is left with a terror campaign against no common enemy and would likely turn against itself.
- INDOCHINA HAD EXPERIENCED GENERATIONS OF WESTERN REPRESSION THAT INSTILLED AN INATE DISTRUST AND HATRED THAT NO AMOUNT OF CANDY COULD OVERCOME. Dispite the intrusion of Anglo Empirialism in the twenties most Iraqis alive today are still more afraid of Sunnis and Mulahs than Yankees. They greeted us with huzzahs because they bought our line of shit that we came to give them democracy and rule of law. The Insurgency is fueled more than anything else be a post-ghurebian impression that it was a charade. With the removal of the invader this dubious band of brothers is left with a terror campaign against no common enemy and would likely turn against itself.
Rep. Murtha, decorated war hero and man with a face no one could disrespect (except ChickenHawks and WarWhores) hasn't just realized that pursuing this war is in not in the best interests of America, he realizes that pursuing it is not in the best interests of the Veterans who have fought, the Iraqis who have trusted and Posterity which will judge us all.
