Stansfield Turner, Director of Central Intelligence under President Jimmy Carter, has called Vice President Dick Cheney "a vice president for torture", saying that Cheney "was damaging America's reputation by overseeing torture policies of possible terrorist suspects". Turner made these comments in an interview with Britain's ITV news yesterday.

Quite frankly, I'm happy that Mr. Turner has called it as he saw it and let it be known.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

on the White House Interactive question submission forum. C'mon, it'll be fun! Here's my question:

"Cheney was recently described by former CIA director Stansfield Turner as the "Vice-President for Torture" because his stance that legislation prohibiting cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners in U.S. custody would tie the president's hands when it came to fighting terrorism. My question is this: Doesn't this administration realize that when we resort to using torture, we are no longer fighting terrorism? That we have, in fact, become terrorists ourselves?"

  •  Geesh, that should get much more exposure! (none)
Really, I hope a lot of Europeans make a gib fuss about it. Cheney just deserves it. Kudos to the Stansfield Turner guy.
  •  This needs broader exposure (none)
Cheney need to stop torturing the country and resign.

  •  Go Turner. (none)
Since Cheney seems to enjoy torture so much, maybe he should get a helping of it himself. See how he likes it then.

  •  an important point... (none)
...torture doesn't work. even in the "ticking time bomb" scenario...would you want someone who'd say anything to get you to stop sending you out on a wild goose chase? then the time bomb  goes off.

That, of course, is irrelevant in the big picture. Torture is, more importantly, evil, which is of course why Emperor Cheney is in favor of it.
