Uh oh, did he really just say that? After the jump hear me out on why this should be the Democrats' message.
Democrats made a strategic blunder when they recently they start calling for a withdrawl in Iraq. By positioning us as losing the war they opened up to the "retreat and defeat" line we are seeing now. This should have been the message instead:
We won the War in Iraq, it is time to bring the troops home. We have completed our objectives, we have removed Saddam Hussein from power, we have made sure there are no WMDs, and we have liberated the Iraqi people. Now that Iraq has established a sovereign goverment and a constitution, we need to bring our troops home
This gives Democrats complete cover to call for withdrawal without looking like they are letting the terrorists win or being weak on defense. Now I know there is a knee jerk reaction to all things Bush, but this in fact would put Bush on the defensive. Instead of Democrats falling on the defensive like they have now, Bush and any supporters of his would be forced to defend why we were still in Iraq after we had completed our objectives. Democrats would seize the upperhand on the war and throw Republicans into disarry. And worst case scenario, Bush actually does withdraw troops.
