Parents and local officials praised the stern leadership and disciplinary style of Principal John Smith at Eugene McCarthy Middle School for "doing what had to be done." After hearing reports of Spanish students speaking Spanish in class, Mr. Smith expelled the class for violating rules against speaking foreign languages on school property. Said Mr. Smith, "Rules are rules and breaking the rules cannot be tolerated." He continued, "If we let Spanish students speak Spanish, then the next thing you know, the French students will want to speak French, and we just can't have that."

Supporters of the principal cited the Bible as why only one language should be tolerated. One outspoken parent said, "If we keep letting people speak other languages, the next thing you know is we'll have a Tower of Babel situation, then we'll all be running around going what the hell did you just say?" Other parents worried that drug deals and curse words could be going on right in front of the teachers. "If we don't know what they're saying, we can't judge them properly," said one worried mother.
Unbelievably, the Principal also had detractors, such as the communist organization, ACLU and other supporters of chaos and anarchy. When asked for comment, they merely said, "blah, blah, blah, something about rights, blah, blah, blah."
