Halloween is the one day people expect knocks on their doors - what a good day to "Get out the vote!" Maybe you could dress up as Uncle Sam. Or the Gizzle Wizzle. Or the Big Dog. Or just paint "VOTE (kerry)" on a white t-shirt.
Trick or Vote
Trick or Vote is a voter mobilization project to combine fun with civic action. It is made possible by the participation of several nationwide organizations. On Halloween, Sunday, October 31st, costumed volunteers will canvass door-to-door to remind people to vote. Trick-or-Vote is expanding nationwide, focusing on swing cities.
This Halloween, Trick or Vote!
In the year 2000 a young lawyer was in Cincinnati helping a friend run for office. Halloween came along and he dressed as a lawn sign and went door to door with his face covered in blue and the word VOTE. (His friend ended up losing that election, but now is on the Cincinnati City Council.)
Two years later...Some friends in 2002 gathered with that same young man in fair Oregon to drum up ideas to engage new people in forward-thinking political action. That phalanx of friends stormed Oregon in 2002. Before Halloween that year, a friend said, "We won't trick or treat; we'll Trick or Vote."
In 2004, fantastic young organizers got together and connected their national friends and other great organizations with the idea. In an exercise of "open source politics," folks like Sarita, Malia, Billy, Jefferson, Karl, Joe, Chris, Greg, Monique, and Julie are helping make Trick or Vote bigger than ever.
With more riding on this election than any in our lifetimes, it's crucial that we mob our cities to get people voting. Trick-or-Vote will bring together thousands of young people this Halloween, to celebrate democracy in costumes and style.
