Ok, so I created a attention grabbing headline to get some attention to this important op-ed in the WPO about Gore today. I have been around along time (pre-scoop), and know you need a great headline to not go right down the drain. The WPO didn't exactly endorse Gore, but at the same time this piece explains why Gore is so appealing at this time, and why his wonkish movie is creating such a stir when in ordinary times it would be ignored if it was even made at all.
As Sebastian Mallory explains;
Ordinarily this film would never have been made, let alone be scheduled for release in hundreds of theaters... (but) by contempt for expert opinion on everything from Iraq reconstruction to the cost of thier tax cuts, Republicans have turned diagram Gore into a hero.
Sebastian talks about how the Republicans have created a Perot moment for Gore by thier willful distortion of the truth and thier bungling. I would add that for a Cassandra to assume power the moment must be right. People will ignore the leaders like Churchill and Gore until the truth of thier earlier statements become abundantly clear. Then they turn to them to lead a path out of the wilderness.
On to the implicit endorsement;
Six years ago, Bush narrowly defeated Gore, apparently because voters thought he would be a nicer guy to have a beer with. But after years of government bungling, and a willful indifference to truth, the national mood seems to be changing. Voters have seen that nice guys can screw up. And technocrats with diagrams and charts have never seemed so interesting.
So, the buzz in the MSM continues to gain strenght about Gore, who would have thunk it? Now that the media is on board too, who can doubt this is Gore's "hour"?
