New York Times Editor's Note
The New York Times on Wednesday published an editor's note that criticized its coverage leading up to the Iraq war, particularly relating to Iraq's weapons and its relationship to international terrorists. A review shows that at least five of the problematic stories cited by The Times were published in The Oregonian. In many but not all cases, The Oregonian followed up with pieces that challenged or questioned the claims in earlier stories, although those follow-ups did not always receive the same prominence of placement. In addition, many stories that raised questions about the intelligence related to Iraq and weapons development were published in The Oregonian before and after the start of the war.
Here is the perma-link to details
On their public editor weblog, The Oregonian states which NY Times articles were published and how many times they ran articles questioning those accounts.
Ok, so there is some self-defense going on here. As the old saw goes, you can't un-ring a bell. If news were a product like aspirin, the New York Times would have to recall its product for the safety of the consumer. At least The Oregonian did something.
The other daily in the Portland, OR, metro area, The (Vancouver,WA) Columbian, has published nothing about the New York Times fiasco, not so much as a one paragraph blurb in the "news roundups."
I don't believe The Columbian carries New York Times news service, but they carried similar AP accounts during the time periods in question.
I would love to hear from folks outside of the New-York-Boston-DC media markets how their local papers are covering the NY Times-Miller disaster. Are other papers simply ignoring a the shame and downfall of a Pulitzer prize winner? Are they pointing to how many stories they ran presenting alternative views?
