Why did Bush force Frist to flip flop on a Bolton vote?
Besides the basics -- because he can and because Bush and Frist have no respect for the independent role of the Senate in our checks and balances system -- Bush just doesn't care if there ever is a U.N. Ambassador.
If there were an Ambassador now, he would have to take some heat over the Downing Street Memos/Minutes.
He would have to deal with global responses to the U.S.'s non-response to global warming.
And lots more.
Plus - Bolton will clearly be an embarassment. Even if he can control himself in public, and that's no certainty, he won't in private. But it won't stay private. Every harsh word or veiled threat from Bolton's lips will get leaked -- pronto.
So, yes, I think we do have to keep Bolton away from the U.N. But let's realize the benefits Bush gets from that, too.
