I think of it like boxing...
Schiavo, Katrina, SS Reform, Iraq, Miers, and the Libby indictment - these are all body punches and 1-2 combinations that Bush and the Republican base have been hit with over the past year. Democrats are in a perfect position to capitalize on their current weaknesses and strike a final blow that'll knock them out for at least the next two elections.
Not only will it knock out Republicans in general, but it will soundly defeat the fundamentalist, evangelical agenda. This is an opportunity to turn the moderate wing of the Republican party against the extremists and marginalize the Dobsons and Falwells of the GOP for at least 10 years.
Republicans are on the ropes with this one, and the only thing Bush has got left is a desperation hay-maker from the farthest reaches of his extremist base. That's what he gave us in Alito.
Bush is beholden to the radical right wing, a fact that moderate Republicans have pretended to ignore for far too long. Until now. Alito represents every diabolical aspect of the GOP's marriage to fundamentalist extremists and nobody can deny it. The only ounce of strength Bush has left, his only hope at coming off the ropes, is to marshal the strength of those extremists for one last effort against mainstream Americans.
Defeating Alito is our Rocky Balboa moment - if we can land this one solid punch, then we'll put the Republicans on the mat, with the 10-count expiring in November of 2006.
If Alito is defeated, the radical right is done. It is absolutely critical that this man be cast as the pawn of the radical rightwing extremists that he really is.
They have been waiting for this moment for 25 years, and with Bush's ascendency and re-election they were convinced that America had finally accepted their pseudo-theocratic agenda. The Republican leadership has told those nuts for years that they were winning elections because people actually liked their ideas, not because voters were hustled by phony PR and lowest-common-denominator talking points. Let us put an end to this right now!
Let us fight this! Let liberals as well as moderates from both the Democratic AND the Republican parties unite and deliver a resounding chorus of rejection to the fundamentalist extremists that have hijacked the GOP - let us tell them in clear terms: TAKE YOUR FUNDAMENTALIST ZEALOTRY AND GO TO HELL!
