  •  I'll be back a short time (4.00 / 15)

to post some of the signature statistics that I can get from the petition site.

It won't hurt to repost a link to this diary or the petition link if you've posted it in threads on other blogs.  With people coming and going, this may be the first time some would see this.

And, thanks to everyone who has pitched in to help.

  •  Dean says he's not backing off (4.00 / 4)

In this story - apologies if it has appeared elsewhere in comments - Dean says he isn't backing off one bit.

Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Saturday that positive responses from key supporters have reinforced his determination to keep talking tough even though some congressional Democrats have suggested he should tone down his rhetoric.

"People want us to fight," Dean told the national party's executive committee. "We are here to fight."

Addressing Iowa party activitists later Saturday in Des Moines, he added: "We need to be blunt and clear about the things we're going to fight for. I'm tired of lying down in front of the Republican machine. We need to stand up for what we believe in."

Dean is waking this party up! I love it! He will win over centerists and independents. Imagine if Limbaugh was chastised every time he knocked a segment of the population for being liberals? Imagine GOP politicians saying, "He doesn't speak for me!"? Yikes! Dean speaks for me and I'm feelin' warm and fuzzy! Dr. Dean, don't ever stop! Thank you!

  •  "line voided" entries? (none / 0)

Why do some of the entries in the petition say, "line voided"? Does that mean that the signature is invalid?

Apparently there were some trolls who put down invalid signatures, that's probably why you are seeing voided signatures.
    •  meg is right (4.00 / 3)

voided are the ones I purged. Stupid trollish or just questionable sigs. Rejected signatures are the ones I reviewed after I got administrative rights so I could catch them before they show up.

Now, when someone signs it shows pending, if I think the sig is questionable or it's a crank, I reject it.  It's soooo much easier that way.  And saves a whole lota eyeballs that were helping me identify the cranks yesterday.

And, BTW, I was right.  It was immensely satisfying to purge the cranks.  They gave meaning to the phrase: smarter trolls please.

    What He Says.

He works to rebuild the Party; if he'd asked us to start a Third Party, that's where I'd be. He goes where few of his critics have gone before him--Red States--while Benedict Joe Biden and Holy Joe talk talk talk on Tee Vee. He gets worse treatment by the press than Chuck (Barf Bag) Colson--who calls Deepthroat a Traitor. He goes tourist class to get there. He LISTENS to real folks. He has more courage in his left nut than ten of his critics have in a pile on posse.

He is authentic. He is passionate. He is in it for us, not hisself. He is a patriot in a time of false political prophets.

    Worth our support? You bet.

"pretty much a white, Christian party" to find the phrase in context. It doesn't seem to be there. It's funny watching how pissed off all of the white Christians are. How dare he? Surely. Jesus will smite him! What I like about it is the fact that it is a fact. The GOP are helping by saying it over and over. Next I hope Dean points out that the tax breaks went to the wealthy and regular folks are having a tough time paying for heating fuel and gas. Maybe these same pinheads will repeat those words ad naseum. The more people think about what Dean said, the more they will realize that it is the gospel truth!

  •  The Big Dick weighs in (none / 0)

    Cheney Criticizes Dean Over Remarks
    By Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Howard Dean is "over the top," Vice President Dick Cheney says, calling the Democrats' chairman "not the kind of individual you want to have representing your political party."

"I've never been able to understand his appeal. Maybe his mother loved him, but I've never met anybody who does. He's never won anything, as best I can tell," Cheney said in an interview to be aired Monday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

Dean was elected governor of Vermont five times between 1992 and 2000. He ran for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination but closed down his campaign after poor showings in early primaries.

In recent weeks, Dean has described the GOP as "pretty much a white, Christian party" and said many Republicans have "never made an honest living." Republican leaders have called on him to apologize, and even some Democrats have distanced themselves from his remarks.

"So far, I think he's probably helped us more than he has them," Cheney said in the interview taped Friday. "That's not the kind of individual you want to have representing your political party.

The vice president added: "I really think Howard Dean's over the top. And more important ... I think many of his fellow Democrats feel the same way."

Dean said Saturday that positive responses from influential supporters have reinforced his determination to keep talking tough.

"People want us to fight," Dean told the national party's executive committee. "We are here to fight."

someone mentioned that 10,000 on a petition is considered a significant number.  Everything over that is gravy.

Since this was over the weekend and I wanted to get it to them next week, 10,000 sounded good to me.

It can remain open as long as I want, and be delivered in batches.  10,000 in a first batch would be a good start.

the 10,000 as a reasonable number to expect given the short amount of time, the administrative aspect of going through the names to make certain there are no trolls, etc.
        •  I couldn't remember who did (none / 0)

It's gotten so much easier now to go through the names upfront.  Not to say someone won't slip through but it won't be many.  I actually had someone out of the blue email me with a questionable name so I just purged it.  I figure, if it sounded questionable to her, that was good enough for me. It was a toss up to me. Plus since I put the disclaimer up, they can always email me if they go back looking for their name and don't find it.

So my thoughts have now turned to getting it to DC. I've made some contacts here in MN, waiting to hear back.

  •  yuh mutha (none / 0)

I figure that whenever Cheney comes out of his cave in hell to comment on something from our side, it must be having an effect. The last thing they want is for the Democrats to take off their white gloves, because they're more docile and managable when they stay polite (or neutered, as Grover Norquist puts it). As Clinton has said, they always have to make their attacks personal because they can't justify their policies.

Also note that we have the Republicans REACTING to a Democrat on Sunday's airwaves. Think about it, the tables are turned for a change...

Go Howard, scream louder. We need you in this fight, and it's going to get a lot uglier before 2006. Nothing less is at stake than our democracy.

    Today's WaPo, on A5
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/11/AR2005061100609_2.html

"...Dean had been criticized within his own party for comments that included the observation that the Republicans "all look the same" and are "pretty much a white Christian party." An undaunted Dean, noting some "catty articles in the press this week about fundraising," said the party had raised "over $100,000 in 24 hours on the Web, unsolicited."

"People want us to fight," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said at the DNC executive committee meeting in Washington yesterday.

"People don't know where we stand on a lot of issues," he said. "I believe this country's a Democratic country, with a big 'D.' If we got 48 percent of the vote, with their machine and our 30 years behind theirs, then this is a country that if voters vote and if they understand what we believe in, we're going to win. Now, that's why Republicans like to suppress the vote."

I'm getting kinda Deaned-out here. Jeez, just how much do we have to keep going on about that?

For days now...What he says, what it means, what the wingnuts  say about what he says and what he means, what the MSM will or will not cover about what he says and what he means, what the Dems think/say/feel/do about what he says and what he means, what WE think/say/feel/DO about what he says and what he means, what We think/say/feel/do about what the Dems think/say/feel/do about what he says and what he means...

And, of course, Save Our Dean petitions. Aren't we having just a bit of "Terri Schiavo" moment here?

You 'spose there's just a tiny chance that maybe if we just shut up about this, it will blow over? It will anyway, eventually, so do we have to keep getting our undies in a twist over this?

I guess this is a Dem thing, which I'm not (Labor/Indie). So, I don't get it. But, if you do, more power to you. Just wanted to see if anyone else out there was getting Deaned-out too.

There are other diaries. Perhaps you should visit one. Or write your own. You are not trapped in this one somehow, are you?

      2. the base raises hell with the Vichy Dems

      3. the base pours money into DNC coffers

      4. Republicans are forced to defend themselves (see today's Sunday Morning Hot-Air Circuit)

The upshot of all this will be a more competitive Democratic party and some "downticket" Democratic victories in 2006 -- including a few in some surprising places.  That's building our bench for successive elections, which is just what we hired Dean to do.

Enjoy the hype while we have it.  It'll make it harder for Bush to get his message out.

My (dirty) white 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage Coupe still has two DEAN FOR AMERICA stickers on the back bumper from October of 2003. Even after Dean lost the nomination, I wouldn't take them off. I remain a Dean Democrat.

Terror must be maintained or the U.S.A. is doomed. It is the logic of history.
