AUSCHWITZ, Poland, May 28 -- Pope Benedict XVI prayed today at the cells and crematoriums of the death camps here, on a visit he called "particularly difficult and troubling for a Christian, for a pope from Germany."

The NY Times didn't mention it, but the NPR story noted that a Cantor was there to sing the Kadish, the traditional Jewish prayer of mourning, and afterward he recited the names of all the death camps.
Considering the advance billing, I've been rather encouraged by this Pope. Recently the Church at least floated the idea that condoms were preferable to spreading HIV infection; now Benedict XVI visits Auschwitz and says or has someone say most of the right things.
