Petition Signature Fun Facts (these figures do include redacted sigs) Updated 9:15pm CST, Mon. June 13:

The petition was online and taking signatures on Fri. June 10 at 10:30 pm CST.  Within 5 hours of being posted it was #3 on the most popular petitions list. We were #1 by yesterday and it is still #1 on the most popular list.

6/10: 558

6/11: 4437

6/12: 3719

Stats from the last 24 hours:

There were no sigs from 7:00pm to 10:00pm

The smallest # of sigs/hour was 5:00pm with 4, followed by 2:00am with 12

The largest # of sigs/hour was 8:00am with 907, followed by 11:00am with 619.

I will keep Fun Facts as a regular feature.  So check back often.  There may be a quiz on this.

Next big TO DO: How to get the petition delivered. I need major help on this folks. This could be the topic of discussion in today's diary.  Or someone could start a related diary devoted to it. If we want this to have an impact, we need media coverage and some prominent group or person(s) to 'sponsor' getting it to the congressional leadership.

We are closing in on our goal.  Now let's come together and figure out how to deliver this petition.

  •  I won't be around much today (3.83 / 18)

I do have to go to work shortly.

I'll need your help to keep the numbers updated by posting them in the comments.  I will try to review sigs periodically but won't be able to update the diary until later this afternoon.

Thank you everyone for all of your help. The signature phase is almost complete.  Now on to the delivery phase.

    •  Next step, delivery. (none / 1)

      I'm in to help..
I'm free all this week (yay graduation).
Here are my current feeling about delivery.
I doubt we will be able to pick up any congressional endorsements for this, but class should be places to our friends, especially webroots friends.
Probably no takers at the DNC either.
But, all we need is a little press coverage to make this work.
A group of people in DC could make a nice fanfare out of delivering the petition, and with the media interest in Howard right now, get coverage.
I can do press work, but an expert would great, especially one with a DC press list.
      Do we have these resources?
    •  Deliver to Dean (none / 1)

The press loves to cover Dean.  That's a sure soundbite.

Hand deliver petition to DNC--preferably to Dean personally--mini press opp.

Email it to Biden et al.

The news is not only in the sheer numbers but is also in the speed of collecting signatures, i.e. fundraisning potential.  If we signed we would also give in any Dean related emergency.

    •  Don't stop! Go for 25,000! (none / 1)

I know it annoys some folks when the bar on these petitions keeps getting raised, but Glynis -- at the rate you're garnering signatures here, you'll have 25,000 by the EOB tomorrow, or early Wednesday morning at the latest.

Since seeing it (and signing) on Saturday morning, I've pimped this out to the folks at Alternet, Huffington Post, and a few smaller blogging communities that have overt Dean supporters in their ranks. :)  And if you haven't written DemocracyForAmerica yet on this, let me know and I will. My email is alesia at metaphorsforlife dot com.

I also have some talent writing press releases - and PRWeb online has a free service that's heavily trafficked. Just let me know!

    •  voided lines (none / 0)

Glynis - I just signed and while there looked at some of the signatures.  There are a lot of voided lines, so it doesn't actually include 10,000 signatures even if you get to that number.  It looks like a LOT of voided lines.  Could you check that out?  Maybe that is people who didn't verify their signature by email.  I don't think you should send this yet, in any case.

when I predicted that the bat would really soar come Monday. You gotta leave this up for awhile, weekends were always the slowest when the bat was up for fundraising.

Question, how does today compare with Saterday and Sunday (usually the slowest day)? What should the new goal be I woonder?

      •  I will leave it up at least through Wednesday (none / 0)

The Fun Facts with the total # of sigs/day should give a clue of the pace for each day.  It'll be interesting to see tomorrow what the totals end up to be for today compared to the other days.  It does include the redacted sigs but at least it gives a flavor for pace.  Yesterday afternoon the trolls were really hitting it hard.  You can tell by the number of signature rejected lines.

  •  So many pending approvals (none / 0)

in the 9,000 range.  Are you being cautious at this stage or are there really so many dubious names on the list?

Congratulations on an excellent idea, by the way.  Do not wrap up the petition too early.  Please give it a chance to make the rounds at least today!

  •  my email msg, if you want it (none / 0)

use it, edit it, send it, if you want:

    --------------
Our super gutsy and feisty DNC Chair is getting attacked generally by the GOP, the Right Wing Noise Machine and echo chamber, mainstream media, and most unfortunately, by a few spineless and opportunistic Dems (Joe Biden among others). This is for telling the truth about Republicans in Dean's refreshing I-call-'em-as-I-see-'em style.

Sign the petition at the link below, and pass it on.

If the Right Wing really thought Dean was such an awful Chairman, do you think they'd say so? No way. They'd be doing a very, very private happy dance.

Nope, they want him out because he's firing up people like you and me. He's been concentrating recently on reaching out to Dems in Red States with great success. Very bad news for the GOP.

If the Right Wing is THAT scared of him, we KNOW we've got a good thing.
We need to back him up and send a strong message NOW.

We'll also be telling those few Dems who've been piling on, that we're watching them, and to cut it out and get with the Chairman's program.

Sign it and pass it on:
    http://www.petitiononline.com/Dean/petition.html

p.s. Just this weekend, VP Dick Cheney had some choice words to say about how mean and impolite Dean is. That's the same sweet Dick Cheney who publicly told Senator Leahy to "Go F*ck Yourself."

  •  My last update and post until this evening (none / 0)

9151 legit signatures.  We will hit the goal within the next hour or so.  They are streaming in steadily but I won't be able to approve the pendings to get them on the legit list for a few hours.  I've got to go to work now.

The pending approval means they've signed and I need to look them over before I get them on the legit list.  You will see those pendings counted in the total number they give you when you click view signatures.  So until I approve them you don't know how many will actually be part of the petition is legitimate signers.

I will try to update at lunch time today.

Please keep things going while I'm gone.

  •  The Backbone Campaign (none / 0)

delivered a  spine to DNC Headquarters on
Friday, January 21, as part of the Counter-Inaugural.

The Backbone Campaign is a national grassroots effort to embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values. It strives to expand the political dialogue by providing creative tools for citizens and the progressive movement. The backbone symbolizes an interlocking agenda, a coalition, and the personal courage necessary to fight for a future worthy of our children.

To symbolize those demands the Backbone Campaign will bring its 70 foot puppet of a human spine, with progressive planks written on each vertebra.....
Specifically, they will urge voting DNC members to vote their conscience and elect Gov. Howard Dean to DNC Chair, to amended Democratic Party Platform to include the Voter's Bill of Rights, and for vehement opposition by Congressional Democrats to the privatizing of social security, and dangerous cabinet and judicial appointments.

Maybe we can borrow that backbone as part of the presentation! ;)

  •  Slightly less colorful petition solitication.... (none / 0)

With the difficult issues this week presented, just in this past week, by Iraq, the U.S. economy, the meddling of research findings regarding the condition of the environment, Ohio's "Coingate"  and the new findings on Bolton, it is important that the Democrats stand together.

Soon facing our Congress will be Social Security, Patriot Act amplification, and making the tax cuts (proposed to boost us out of the 2001 recession) permanent.

Please read and sign the petition to Congressional Democrats to keep their focus on these issues --  which may be more important to us than those who live inside Washington, D.C.

    Thanks, XXX

  •  Put on the DEAN bumper sticker today (none / 0)

I still have some from the primary campaign that was derailed by the Repug media gang.  John Kerry will have to be replaced by Howard Dean, he is definitely the figure we need to rally the Democratic party and the whole country.

The DINO idiots like Lieberman and Biden are just fat-cats who want to keep the money rolling into their accounts, they don't give a damn about this country.

It is not even a big political risk to criticize the evil idiot team of Bush-Cheney, they have ruined our country and the world for five years + and the dozing US public is finally waking up, 1700 dead and 12,000+ grievously wounded may finally be having an impact on the sea of TV watchers.

  •  So, we get 10,000... (none / 0)

Why not just keep going? for a while? This number of sigs was friday night through the weekend... at least give us a few weekdays to collect, with all the appropriate blog links and reminders...

I think we are selling ourselves short at 10,000.

    Way short.

  •  I put my money where my mouth was last night... (4.00 / 3)

and I suggest others do the same.  For each 4 I got in my tip jar, I contributed $4.01 to the DNC.  That's $32.08 that will help Howard help democracy in our country.

Maybe when folks put up a mojo jar they contribute something -- anything! -- to the DNC of the candidate or anti-candidate of their choice.

Maybe for each 4, give a nickel to whoever is running against Santorum, or, for each 4, send a rose to Barbara Boxer... or, for each 4, write an LTE to a newspaper or something like that.

$4, as it turned out, was fine last night, but if I had gotten 400 of them, it would have been a problem... still, my $32.08 will go to a good cause.

and how about also including a lapel button with an American Flag and the words HOWARD DEAN SPEAKS FOR ME...with every petition and urge Democrats to start replacing 'made in china' american flag pins that now seem to be mandatory IF you are a 'patriot' with your buttons.

    just a thought.

    •  Good Kos quotes (none / 1)

"There are legal reasons for this. Anything the party does must be paid for, full price, and a scaled political discussion encompassing 100 million would cost Dean's entire marketing budget. So this discussion takes place elsewhere, at Dailykos, at the Huffington Post, at TPM, at Eschaton, at Liberal Osis, at 1,000 other "points of light" where Democrats gather around small virtual campfires to feel their shared victimhood and plot their political revenge.

And at the end of the day, those bloggers put up their links to Dig Deep for Howard and people respond.

The bloggers pay the bills. The bloggers flog the netroots. The netroots respond with money. And it is good. Just as Richard Viguerie was good for Ronald Reagan, so Markos Moulitsas is very, very good for Howard Dean."

    •  This is so classic. (none / 0)

Everything is playing out just as it did in the primaries.  Dean says something "outrageous," (for example: We're no safer now that Saddam has been caught.) and my gawd!  Dems shreak and cover their faces.  Reps laugh and point fingers.  Everyone distances themselves and several heads explode.  Pundits shake their jowls over and over in distain and disbelief.

Then the dust settles and a week, a month, 6 months later, what Dean said is CW.

I've come to think of his pronouncements as being both brave and somewhat prophetic.  It helps me weather the initial idiocy expressed by Dean's "colleagues."

  •  the problem with this petition is... (none / 0)

That the count is way off.  All the rejected signatures are still being counted as if they are still signed up, rather than removing them and adjusting the count. This is a software issue with this petition website, I'm guessing, so no fault of the organizer. BUT, I do hope that someone will go through and keep up with how many "rejecteds" there are so that we can get an accurate count?
    •  My count is accurate (none / 0)

When you get a count from the website by clicking on the show signatures link then yes, it is off  for the reason you say.

The count I give for "legitimate signatures" is an accurate count, taken from a list I can get as petition owner.  There are no voided/rejected lines on that report.

For an accurate count, watch my updates in the box up top.

  •  am I supposed to get an e-mail? (none / 0)

I signed but I have not rec'd a confirmation e-mail.  I will be leaving my office in 14 minutes.  If I don't get an e-mail will I be redacted?
    •  I have a hunch they are swamped (none / 0)

No, you won't be redacted if you don't get an email. I am looking at every signature.

  •  Actually, it's Chip Shields, not Chris. (none / 0)

And he's a state representative, not a DCer.  But hey, it's all good!

He's also one of my precinct committee people!  My hubby and I (precinct captain's) thot it was pretty cool that a state rep would be a PCP.

Oops!  And I knew that too. I even have it written down on paper right but typed it wrong.  Doh!  I had to find his email address yesterday so I knew he was a state rep.  Thanks for pointing it out so I could correct it.

      •  Goodness, Miss glynis, where are my manners? (none / 0)

I post a comment to nit-pik and don't even say THANK YOU for all of your incredibly hard work on this petition.

You've done a good, good thing here.  Thanks for giving Dean supporters a chance to be "heard".

And do leave it up for a bit.  It's still climbing pretty steadily from what I've observed.

        Thanks again!

        •  that's ok (none / 0)

I have this personal thing about accuracy so I was glad you were my additional set of eyes to catch it.

And you're welcome.  I'll admit I didn't really think about what I might be getting myself into but it is immensely gratifying to do it.

I got an email from someone who signed it saying she's written LTE's and to her elected officials but she was still frustrated b/c she didn't know if her one voice made any difference.  She said signing the petition made her feel much better b/c she was joining her voice with thousands of others.

Now that makes all the work worth it.

in my signature check because it's a good sig, but #9889 Hon. Vicki Walker from Missouri. Does anyone know if she's a state rep or Congress? Just thought you'd like to know Glynis
  •  I'm well over 11000 (none / 0)

Don't remember the exact number, but I was well over 11000 for my signature.

The Democratic Party needs to fight for what it believes in, and Howard Dean is a fighter. The Republican Party would criticize Dean no matter what he did or didn't do.

If you've considered signing, but haven't - listen to this and tell me this is not the person you want fighting for us! "Back gotting" (you know I've got your back, you've got mine) definintely goes both ways w/Howard and it's our turn to get his!

    1. Give money to the DNC: http://www.actblue.com/list/dnc or go to Democrats.org . It doesn't matter how you give... they're getting the message.
    2. Call Your Democratic Elected Officials. Let them know that Democrats are tired of making jokes about "the circular firing squad": we stand behind Chairman Howard Dean and expect them to refrain from ripping into him in public. If they disagree with him on strategy or tactics, tell it to Dean directly: don't air it to a hostile media.
    3. Sign the Dean Speaks for Us Petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/Dean/petition.html
    4. Write Letters to the Editor
    5. Spread the word to your network of friends and family
