A man was kidnapped and allegedly beaten and drugged by masked men. The kidnappers release him later on an abandoned road.
The kidnappers group was later identified. But no one involved is in the slightest danger of being jailed. How is this possible? Sure, the mafia or a drug gang might buy off the local police or judges or even the local federal agents or federal judges, but some other federal agency might come in and investigate anyway.
But these kidnappers are safe...
The trick? If you want to terrorize and kidnap people, you have to go for the BIG con...
We turn now to the case of Khaled El-Masri. He is the German citizen who sued the CIA for illegally kidnapping him in Macedonia two and a half years ago. After accusing him of being a member of al Qaeda, the CIA flew him to a secret prison in Afghanistan and held him for five months.
While in CIA custody, El-Masri says he was repeatedly beaten, drugged, roughly interrogated by masked men, detained in squalid conditions and denied access to an attorney or his family. He was only released after the CIA realized they had detained the wrong man, and left him alone on an abandoned road in Albania.
In December, El-Masri sued the United States but last week the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia dismissed the case. Judge T.S. Ellis III ruled that holding the proceedings would jeopardize state secrets. -- from: U.S. Court Rules Wrongfully-Held Detainee Khaled El-Masri Can't Sue CIA For Kidnapping Him.
So all you need to become the perfect terrorist or kidnapper is to get your own flunky (in this case Alberto Gonzales) into a high position in the Justice Department (perhaps Attorney General? You have to think BIG to get away with these kinds of crimes).
But under George Bush, kidnapping is now the perfect crime. It makes you wonder, if Saddam did actually have thousands of Iraqis murdered and tortured (and he DID, duh) because they opposed his regime, would it even be considered a crime if his name was George Bush (answer, not according to Alberto Gonzales)?
