Our
friend from the right RFTR points us to
The Volokh Conspiracy, which offers the following statistics from Dartmouth:
... of the 341 professors registered to vote in Hanover, NH, Lebanon, NH, and Norwich, VT, 225 (66 percent) are Democrats and eighteen (5 percent) are Republicans. Ninety-eight (29 percent) did not register a party. ...
These stats validate the liberal point-of-view.
I do not see anything wrong with these results for the following reasons:
- Dartmouth College is one of the prestigious schools in our country. Its faculty is undoubtedly extremely intelligent. There is therefore a strong possibility that these very smart people embrace a liberal point-of-view because it is the correct position to take. If we would respect our elite better and listen a little more to them than to overblown right-wing radio talkshow hosts, we may all be better off.
- Republicans have not been interested in the humanities. They have traditionally focused on money-making schemes. There is, of course, nothing wrong with that. Money making is very important. However, they have just recently stumbled across "moral values" in connection with the Clinton affair. They are now taking baby steps. They are cherry picking some ethical issues and approaching them single-mindedly for political gain. They are leaving untouched a host of other ethical and humanitarian issues: prostitution, corruption, torture, pollution, to name just a few. As long as they are not putting their arms around the whole gamut of these issues and are able to present different viewpoints to give students a full perspective, they are not yet qualified to take a teaching position at a top-level college.
- Correct me if I'm wrong, but I presume Dartmouth College is an equal opportunity employer. I doubt that there is a box on their application form asking for an applicant's political affiliation. There is, however, one university that is founded on political bias: Liberty University, an extreme, right-wing institution. It is safe to say that 100% of its faculty are Republican. So there. The right wing is again unjustly accusing the left of something it itself is guilty of.
So, my dear Republican friends, if you don't like liberal colleges, please send your kids to Liberty University. Our liberal kids will be honored to attend Dartmouth College, a jewel in the crown of our academic world, one of the finest our country has to offer.
