Does your Web Host condone torture? GoDaddy.com does!

Mon Jun 20, 2005 at 04:30:18 AM PDT

(Disclaimer: This is my first Diary. I hope it's OK!)

I have a website hosted by discount web service provicer http://www.godaddy.com . I went to their homepage today to discover this link at the top:

The main blog's url is simply http://www.bobparsons.com (in case they move that link or something).

I was quite shocked that a large web host such as this one would get involved in politics, especially the politics of lies and torture. He then goes on to appeal mostly on an irrational emotional basis, reminding people of the horrors of 9/11 and implying they justify our presence in the Middle East and tortures at Gitmo. How many more companies are openly promoting torture? This is kinda scary. At one point he rages:

I believe we owe it to those who died on 9-11 and to ourselves to destroy all the bastards and their supporters that were behind those attacks -- regardless of what it takes to do so.

(thanks wazdog)
More of my story, and the full text of his post is in the "extended entry" section.
The link goes to the blog of Bob Parsons, the company's founder. The blog's tagline states that it is for the purpose of discussing "Hot political and Internet Issues plus the latest developments at GoDaddy.com!"

The color scheme, graphics, etc. are EXACTLY the same as GoDaddy's main site. The only inclination would would have to believe this is someone's personal blog is the URL, which has the foudner's name in it. I have every reason to believe, then, that some of my money may be used for supporting the political views of the company's owner through PACs, donations, whatnot.

Here's the comment I posted on their blog:

"The argument of "Whatever we do, they're worse!" doesn't hold water with me. You say, "We've taken the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places."

There were no terrorists that had anything to do with 9/11 in Iraq. To imply otherwise is deceitful at best and asinine at worst.

I feel that the money I pay this company could be going to finance political means, without my permission, that I do not agree with.

Keep Business out of politics. I'm cancelling my account, and posting this on dailykos.com"*

If anyone else here has an account with GoDaddy.com, I think it's time to look elsewhere. GoDAddy may be cheap, but their actual services are pretty poor. You can find much better hosting at places like http://www.dreamhost.com .

Here's excerpts of Bob's Dairy entry:

"May we never forget the day!
I still remember the day like it was yesterday. Planes, filled with innocent people, brutally hijacked and exploded into buildings. Countless people (some holding hands) decided to jump hundreds of feet to their death, rather than being burned alive by the scorching flames. And when they landed, they unfortunately killed other people who were on the ground trying to help.

On that day 2,819 people died. The vast majority of them were Americans, but the death toll included citizens from 115 other nations.

Of all those brutally and senselessly murdered, only 289 of them had their bodies recovered intact. Those who had the grisly task of digging through the carnage, found a total of 19,858 body parts.

It was indeed, a dark day for this country. As you might guess, I'm talking about the tragedy that struck America on September 11, 2001.

America did not deserve 9-11.
There are those that have since said we "deserved" this attack. They've said we "had it coming". I could not disagree more. To me, saying that we "had it coming" is the same as saying that someone deserved to be raped - i.e., that they were "asking for it". No individual, of course, ever deserved to be raped, and our country did not deserve to be attacked on 9-11.

Since 9-11, we have been fortunate in that there's not been another terrorist attack on United States soil. I think there are a number of reasons for this. They are:

  1. We've taken the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places.
  2. The terrorists, as a result of our country's outrage and overwhelming military response to the 9/11 attacks, are disorganized and off balance.
  3. Our military and intelligence services are now proactive in hunting down terrorist cells wherever they are and are destroying them.

...
Gitmo serves an important purpose in our fight against terror.

...
The prisoners at Gitmo are America's sworn enemies.
Presently there are over 500 prisoners there; once there were a few hundred more, but over 200 of them have been returned to their country of origin. Most of the prisoners there are "terrorists" and are, beyond any shadow of a doubt, enemies of the United States.

One of the Gitmo detainees is the so called "20th hijacker."
One of the detainees is Mohammed al-Qahtani, who is widely reputed to be the 20th hijacker.
...
Time Magazine's recent article.
Time Magazine recently ran a large article where it talks in detail about the interrogation techniques our military is using to get Mohammed al-Qahtani to talk. Some who read the article, like Dick Durbin, the Senator from Illinois, were horrified that our military would use such interrogation techniques.

Senator Durbin likened the actions of our military at Gitmo to those of Nazis, Soviet gulags and the "mad regime" of dictator Pol Pot. I find this to be a ridiculous exaggeration and an inappropriate comparison, as many millions perished under the crutely of each of the regimes Senator Durbin compares us with.
...
The interrogation techniques at Gitmo are very mild.
It's important to note that to date, there have been no fatalities among the prisoners at Gitmo. Some of the "terrible" techniques we are being decried for using in Gitmo are sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, exposure to cold and heat (as in a cold room), mental games, constant questioning, etc. All of it, when compared to what has been done in the Middle East to extract information from prisoners is mild, indeed.

...
Interrogation techniques in the Middle East are incredibly brutal.
In the Middle East, it's not uncommon to use murder, rape, extreme physical torture (like running a drill through a prisoner's head), electrical shocks to the genitalia, pulling out fingernails, dripping acid on victims, or burning victims with a hot iron or blow torch. Yes, it's a brutal crowd that we're at war with over there.

Among the most infamous torture devices in the Middle East is a Syrian invention--they call it Al-Abd Al-Aswad--The Black Slave. The victim is strapped to a chair with a hole in the center. A red hot poker then rises from the hole and goes into the victim's rectum. It goes in and out and can go as deep as the intestines. I suspect that Syrian interrogators find out rather quickly whatever it is they want to learn.

Senator Durbin strikes again!
In response to a hailstorm of criticism, Senator Durbin returned to the Senate floor and re-read his earlier "Nazi" and "Soviet gulag" comments verbatim.
...
Key prisoners at Gitmo still have not talked -- because our interrogation methods are so weak -- perhaps too weak.
Given the type of individuals we have incarcerated at Gitmo (all of them would love to gouge out your eyes --- and most certainly my eyes), the interrogation techniques we are using there are incredibly mild.
...
Nevertheless, vital information has been obtained from some of the Gitmo detainees.
So even though our interrogation techniques are weak, and even laughable by Middle Eastern standards, our military has nevertheless been able to obtain vital information from the detainees at Gitmo. This information has been used to save American lives both at home and abroad with information.

Now there's a call to close Gitmo.
So it has come to light that our military has been unkind, and on occasion, even mean to our sworn enemies being held at Gitmo. And of course, as a result, there's now a call to shut the prison down.
...
Once again, this man needs to remember that the people in those cells are our sworn enemies. They are lucky to be alive.
...
Closing Gitmo would be a huge mistake.
It doesn't take a lot of thought to realize that it would be a huge mistake if we closed Gitmo - most certainly if we did it just to be politically correct with our sworn enemies.
...
What happened on 9-11 will always make me angry.
If I get enough requests, I'll post the video.
After writing this article, I've once again watched a video showing people jumping to their deaths, one after another, from the World Trade Center. I've thought about making this video available for those reading this blog to see. The video can be found by searching on line, but finding it takes a little effort. If I get enough requests, I'll make it available. I find that watching it every now and then helps me keep things in perspective."

  •  Good Diary (4.00 / 4)

Important information here.  The Tempe Town Lake Festival on July 4th is sponsored by KPHO Phoenix & Safeway, with godaddy.com (charging admission for fireworks? What the --).  I've a mind to write to each of the other two and ask if they espouse the same ideology as their business partner.

BTW, you really ought not to copy and paste entire source material - copyright thing there.

When I wrote: "Important information here." I was referring to the content of your diary, not making a prelude to my reply.

Understood. I think I'll actually write those companies too. It's been a while since I've engaged in activism!

I'd appreciate a recommendation if you agree this is important :) (that goes for anyone else, too!)

  •  This is good info. (4.00 / 2)

I'm gonna recommend it and see if I can leave feedback at godaddy.com even though I'm not a customer.

I'm gonna let them know I'll never be a customer as long as they support blatent violation of the U.S. Constitution.

One correction: The first two or three paragraphs of your diary appear twice.

  •  wow (4.00 / 2)

I'll be canceling my account as soon as I find a good registrar.

Ridiculous. It's disgusting really; someone posted that we should not become like those who attacked us, and his reply was that he couldn't disagree more:

I believe we owe it to those who died on 9-11 and to ourselves to destroy all the bastards and their supporters that were behind those attacks -- regardless of what it takes to do so.

Sad really, especially considering he is a former Marine. Wonder how he'd feel if he had been "captured" by our enemies and sent to a place like Gitmo.

I'm a reseller for them, but I'm not pimping myself here--feel free to go to them directly without referring to me if you prefer:

I haven't a clue what their politics are, but they do offer excellent customer service and fully-featured domain name services for a reasonable price.

...ripped me off a few years ago. Took me months to get my domains disentangled from their system.

I use Dotster as my registrar, and Vizaweb.Com for my hosting. The latter is also Leo Laporte's host, and when you consider the kind of traffic Laporte's radio show and the This Week in Tech podcast inflict on their servers Vizaweb is damn good. They are also a Blue State company (MN) and their management is Reality-Based.

I don't know much about Dotster's political stance but they don't advertise themselves as racist, imperialist pricks like GoDaddy! seems to. I've also been using them since 2000 and they are extremely reliable.

I'd heard some stuff about him awhile back.  I guess it's time to do something.  I don't have hosting services from them, but I have 5 domain names.  What a hassle.  I'll send a note and eventually get them moved.

Registration is only around $9.00 at godaddy, and actually the service has been good.

... Mr. Parsons tended toward the libertarian in my opinion, and has always not hesitated to speak publicly on his views... but this offensive in the extreme, both in it's content and in it's prominent placement on the main page for his business. OMG.

I have quite a few names registered here... recommendations for a replacement everyone? This is the last thing I need to be spending time on right now... I am already so sleep-deprived right now, but damned if I will give my business to the likes of someone who thinks so little of my country that he would drag our collective morals into the mud like that.

I am pissed, sorry for the diatribe... like I said, I am short on sleep.

      •  I agree. (none / 0)

We have a lot of domains with them.  This will suck admin time.

Yeah, I feel the same way.  I've made excuses for him before and kind of appreciated his viewpoint even though it was fairly different than mine, but this is just crap.  I've got eight domains over there and it took me forever to finally move everything over from netsol.  I'm basically just reading all the comments to see if there's a consensus for a good progressive choice registrar to switch to.  God, what a jerk.

    Bob,

First, you are wrong about GITMO and pretty soon, God willing, you and all the Bush apologists will find out. The additional pictures of what Bushco has done will be released soon. With those and the Downing Street Minutes impeachment is on the horizon.

Second, as a businessman, you just made a huge mistake. You just became the Walmart of the .com world. You would have been best served by keeping your opinions to yourself. This ridiculous opinion piece that you posted is already making the rounds on the blogosphere. Someone has already posted your blog on Daily Kos. There are already a number of people who are talking about dropping your service. Way to go!

You may not think that boycotts work, but look at what happened to Sinclair when everyone rode their sponsors on that piece they did on Kerry. I refuse to give any business to Walmart and Home Depot as a result of their rabid support of Bushco.

I am peronally going to do my best to make sure the liberal blogosphere is reminded of your attitude on a weekly basis.

Between this ridiculousness and your ads that exploit women I have confidence that you'll soon be in another line of work.

I'm about ready to start my own business and guess what? Go Daddy will not be hosting my web site.

From one Baltimoron to another I just have to ask... Did you eat a bad crab cake or something?

        •  Iowa, too ... (none / 0)

Godaddy made a lot of Cedar Rapids local news during the Super Bowl this past year, mainly because Parsons worked here in Iowa before moving to Arizona.  Last January, he seemed very against the FCC and, implicitly, the Bush administration, for their censorship practices.  But his latest entry is a ringing endorsement of torture.  How lovely.

Now, this man has a right to his opinion, but it's his own fault if he decides to mix and implicate his personal opinions with his business - as this fantastic diary demonstrates.  To me, it's just bad business to be this explicitly conservative if you're in the business of the 'Internets.'

Thus, no liberal-leaning website owner (or anyone who supports the American Constitution, for that matter) should be registered through Godaddy.  The posts above and below have made it clear that there are MANY other options.

Also, does anyone know if buyblue.org would be interested in this information? (Would this be listed in their category of 'portals' under 'Internet'?)

    •  There are plenty of successful liberals. (4.00 / 4)

All the way from Warren Buffet to the founders of Costco.
    •  My theory (none / 0)

Many successful business people tend to focus on the acquisition of wealth at the expense of a balanced life consisting of work, family, friends, leisure and community.

With all that focus on the "bottom line", taxation is the ultimate boogeyman. If your bank balance is the way you keep score of your self-worth, you'll be no fan of taxes.

Many of the rationales for public spending are based on human values that have already been abandoned by a narrow obsession on wealth building.

Also, the more you have, the more you want to protect... and change represents risk... so conservatism is embraced. Of course, the current administration - though claiming to be conservative - is actually a very radical force. But they do cut federal taxes, which gives them a lot of slack with the wealthy.

Many successful business people tend to focus on the acquisition of wealth at the expense of a balanced life consisting of work, family, friends, leisure and community.

People who are obsessed with money and getting rich get rich more frequently than those that don't. ;-)

It's got nothing to do with being intelligent, it's all about being driven. I know a guy who's determined to get rich, so far he's failed but he's young and I think he'll eventually get there because he wants it so much.

But I never got rich and never will, it's just not that important to me.

There's far more to this mindset than just the bottom line -- if the bottom line were all that mattered, taxes would be only one of a dozen minor grumbles.  That's because there are a dozen or more ways to make up the 25% or so of wealth taxes may take, for example:

        • Take an extra part time job.
        • Get a better education (admittedly, requires delayed gratification).
        • Don't buy so much crap -- think before you buy it.
        • Buy used cars instead of new
        • Use cars till they are dead.  So dead that no deity anyone believes in could resurrect them.
        • Buy fewer cars if possible.
        • Buy the highest quality you can afford, so you aren't replacing cheap crap all the time.
        • Avoid new debt whenever possible.
        • Clobber existing debt whenever possible.
        • If you can't avoid new debt, set up a schedule to clobber it.
        • If you can't clobber debt, refinance it to a lower interest rate / shorter term (or both).
        • Sell junk that's accumulated in your house.

        and so on...

        •  You're thinking like an employed person (none / 0)

People who get their money by working for an employer think about money very differently than people who get their money from investments, and very differently than people who get their money from owning a business.

A lot of small business entrepeneurs vote Republican out of a mistaken belief that Republican policies "favor businesses." I mean, it must be true because the Republicans say it all the time, right?

Never mind that actual Republican policies are generally beneficial only to very large, resource-extracting businesses, and even then only beneficial to the scum at the top, not to the business as a whole.

"Low taxes" are one of those policies that "favor businesses" so a lot of entrepeneurs drink the kool-aid and never add up the numbers.

          •  Ummmm....not sure about that one (none / 0)

Sure, some items in my list relate to employment, and my list is definitely drawn from experiences in employed middle-class life.  However, the main idea I'm working with here is "living within your means".  The core idea behind that concept is independent of the source of income, or the level of wealth someone has.  If you have a significant amount of debt, or a lot of junk in your house you "just had to have", you still have to pay for it whether your income comes from a job, a business, or an investment.

Very few wealthy people, excluding those who inherited their wealth, ever got (never mind stayed) wealthy without living within their means.  A Republican who buys a McMansion with an interest-only mortgage, and carries any amount of credit card debt for more than a very short time, is doing far more damage to his finances than any U. S. government tax policy ever could.

Keep in mind that the online world is dominated by a lot of self styled "libertarian" types who actually tend to be just plain old right wing shitbags when push comes to shove.  In saner times (i.e. Clinton era) they kept their nuttier views to themselves.  The Bush administration is such a polarizing force that it's all out in the open now and you can see just how crazy these people have really always been.  It's part of why I detest computer programmers and IT wankers in general and part of why I'm leaving the field for "real" science.

Fuck you Bob Parsons.  You just lost a customer you fascist piece of shit.

    •  I frequent a community which discusses hosting (none / 0)

a lot. GoDaddy is universally scorned for hosting.

I don't think it's a good idea to host with the same firm you use as a registrar in any case, it's too easy for them to jerk you around. Separate the two functions.

I've always used namesecure as a registrar, since 1999. I think they're owned by verisign/netsol now but that's not affected anything. They're just as cheap as godaddy now and the services are as good as anyones.

    •  Amen (none / 0)

I had a godaddy.com hosting account for about one week before I came to the realization that their service is the worst of the worst. It's cheap, but you don't get anything for your money.

I moved to Ace-Host.net where you can get an account for about the same money with 5 Gig of storage and 50 GB monthly bandwidth, not to mention all the bells and whistles. My service at Ace-Host.net has been so good I extended my contract with them after 3 months.

GoDaddy is designed to make managing your underpowered account next to imposssible, but 90% of the links on every management page take you to extra-cost services they want you to buy.

STAY AWAY FROM GODADDY. They suck more than the telling of it.

      •  Registrar only....hosting is not their bag (none / 0)

by any means. And other may have alternate Registars. I've had great service from GoDaddy for years as Registar and occasional email accounts.(Usually I host my own POP3 and WebMail)

But I agree....Registration only! Now, of course, for many...if that!!

I use fatcow.com (don't know a thing about their politics, though) for registrations and hosting.

I also posted a comment for this guy (second runner-up in the Young Rush PillPoppin' Limbaugh Lookalike Contest), urging him to enlist. He may not get to interrogate prisoners, but I'm sure the Army xcan put him to work doing something, right?

      1) He is dumber than a doorstop and thinks 9/11 on our innecence justifies 9/11 on theirs.

So if someone posts comments critical of the United States' foreign policy on a blog, forum, or other Web site that GoDaddy hosts, or even provides domain registration for, he'd be completely happy if the feds came in and seized all of GoDaddy's business assets, on the grounds that it's supporting the terrorists?

  •  Other registrars? (none / 0)

Anybody know any other good cheap registrars? I have a bunch of domains at godaddy.com. I hate to think my money is going to this schmuck and whatever right-wing interests he promotes.

Dreamhost is OK. No phone support and their site tends to have outages, so not good enough.

    Network Solutions is a rip-off.

  •  Godaddy customer here (none / 0)

I plan to switch as well, along with the others here.  However, I need to find someone as cheap as godaddy, but also has something like the domainsbyproxy privacy protections.  Do any of you know who might be able to do that?
    •  transfer domains (none / 0)

      gkg.net seems pretty reasonable.
    •  Cheap, reliable host (none / 0)

I'm delighted with my service at Ace-Host.net.

5 Gig of storage, 50 GB bandwidth, all the bells and whistles, and online control panel, and as cheap as GoDaddy if you take a longer contract.

I took a very short subscription to start, because I'd just been burned by GoDaddy (which sucks more than the telling of it). After three months, I'd had quick effective responses from tech support, no interruptions of service and I was pleased, so I decided to re-up for a longer contract. I contacted billing and they BACKDATED the discount, so instead of getting a cheaper next year of service, they charged me as if I'd had the longer contract from the beginning.

I couldn't be happier with them.

  •  Thanks so much for the heads-up! (none / 0)

As a (now former) GoDaddy customer, I was shocked and disgusted to see this. I left a comment on Bob's site, and I went ahead and posted my reaction on v-2 as well.

I think Bob Parsons may come to regret this day as the one hos once-promising little shop saw a third or more of its custom evaporate for good. I certainly hope so, anyway.

www.dreamhost.com . Great service, great prices, and they at least SEEM like a bunch of lefties. But who knows; maybe they're not. Even if they're not, they have the decency to keep their views to themselves.
    •  dreamhost (none / 0)

I use dreamhost for my hosting, and they're fantastic.  They're also extremely mac friendly.  Never had a single problem w/ them, and the one time I had a question, I emailed them on a sunday and had a reply less than an hour later!

I used godaddy as my registrar, and am still seeking out an alernative company.  Heed the words of those that recommend you use a separate registrar and host.

Oh yeah, and dreamhost gives great referall bonuses.  Anyone that signs up and feels like giving me the cheddar can use this link:

      http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?pixelthieftv

Or, you can just say pixelthieftv referred you.  Helps keep my site up and running!

      •  Registry (none / 0)

        I go here:
        https://www.secureserver.net/default.asp?prog_id=Discovery_Westbank

I've never had a problem and they're cheap.

I also use Dreamhost but I'll refrain from taking away from your referal link and not post mine. ;)

        •  asdf (none / 0)

SecureServer.net must be a subsidiary of Godaddy:

          https://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/about.asp

Look at the address -- it's the same as Godaddy.com:

          14455 N. Hayden Rd.
          Suite 219
          Scottsdale, AZ 85260

So you're just giving your money to Bob Parsons as well.  Secureserver.net is also the default name servers when you register your domain at Godaddy.com

This is going to be a royal pain.  I wish I knew where the owners of GKG.net and NameCheap.com stood.

    •  They're overselling their hosting service (none / 0)

      They suck for CivicSpace sites.

The Daily Gotham is running slow on their servers and it has all to do with their databases more than anything else.

      •  Site5.com (none / 0)

I really really like Site5.com for hosting of Drupal sites (and a soon to be launched CivicSpace site).  Performance is excellent, they have Fantastico install packages for Mambo, Drupal, etc., and the pricing is really good.  Nice admin panel that wraps around CPanel and makes things even more user friendly.

        I shouldn't have said a thing.

        •  They do look good... (none / 0)

That MultiSite program is a good deal. Not many people realize the benefits of a plan like that, any number of domains limited only as to total bandwidth and disk space. I've got something similar elsewhere for less but it was a special deal that's no longer offered.
    •  Dreamhost Promo Code... (none / 0)

Their 7th anniversary code still works: 777

I got 86 bucks off a two-year pre-pay. 104 bucks for two years, streaming audio, triple disk and bandwidth for as long as they host you and no setup fee? SIGN ME UP, BABY!

  •  we cancelled our account (none / 0)

Or , tried to anyway.. it's not obvious how to cancel,so we sent an email.
    •  Click the Contact link at top and Call. (none / 0)

That's the quickest if you are hosting but be careful you have a substitute set up immediately that is mirroring before you cancel.

If you are  registering there only then you merely need to pick another registrar and move the name.

    •  Don't "cancel"; *transfer* it! (none / 0)

Domain name registrations are registered in one-year increments, so you're not "hurting" GoDaddy by cancelling the domain name before its renewal date--all you're doing is losing your domain ('cus someone else WILL snap it up the SECOND a cancellation goes through).

For web hosting, you can cancel your GoDaddy account whenever you want, but if you don't have the hosting and the site contents transferred elsewhere already (or backed up locally), you'll lose the entire site, so transfer it to a different hosting company before you cancel the original account.

  •  Bradford, It made me mad too. (none / 1)

Mad enough, that it was my first diary posting too, you beat me to it by a couple of hours and I was just furious so it's not quite as coherent as yours.

  •  Can someone either post (4.00 / 2)

a diary or comment here that

1.) tells one how to switch their registration from Godaddy to somewhere else

2.) and a list of places to switch to? (instead of all the ones listed in the comments, all in one place?)

I have about three domain names registered with them, am going to switch today as soon as I figure out how and where to go.

This needs to be sent far and wide throughout the blog world, and if this idiot doesn't care that he is going to lose customers, then GREAT, let him lose them all.

    •  good registrar (none / 0)

A good registrar will have a "transfer domains" function.  gkg.net had a simple 6 step process.
    •  Switching is easy (none / 0)

1.) tells one how to switch their registration from Godaddy to somewhere else

Just go to another registrar, set up an account and request a transfer. You'll have to go to godaddy and make sure registrar lock is off and it will just happen. Often that's all you need to do since they'll copy the dns settings from the existing set up.

You get a free year with namesecure for transfers but I don't much like all the recommending that goes on in threads like this because often people just recommend what they have even if they don't have any experience with alternatives. Recommends fly fast and furious and you learn nothing. I've used a few different registrars and hosting firms. Some are much better than others.

If you want my advice contact me via my profile link.

With the caveat that I run my own webhosting business, which can be quickly ferreted out by searching Google for my handle here, and that I am a reseller of registrar services for www.enom.com, whom I highly recommend if only because they provide  unbeatable DNS service...
