My mom got the fake Republican "I'm Tim Kaine" robocall
twice, once with the NARAL preface. Fortunately, I talked to her and was able to tell her it was from the Republican Governors Association (there was no way to tell that from the call), but it was enough to make her, a lifelong Democrat, be concerned about Kaine until I called. Who knows how well it will accomplish its intended task, how many voters will decide not to come out after all?
Virginians aren't dumb, and I hope enough will be able to see beyond it or ignore all robocalls. I hope they will remember the relentless negative campaigning from Kilgore and realize the only way to get rid of it is to make it fail, not by saying "politics is so sleazy" and avoiding it altogether. (Hint: that's just what they hope you'll think when they put out that garbage.)
I hope my fellow Virginians will remember that "they all do it" just isn't true, that one candidate has had nothing but a long series of nasty ads, ducked questions, and dirty tricks, and the other has been mostly sincere and positive, embracing his record and beliefs (including the parts that some supporters, like me, may not agree with.)
We have a choice today.
We can choose to be governed by a man who believes in the power of a well-run government to improve the lives of its citizens.
Or we can choose to be governed by a man who, behind the name of "Honest Leadership for Virginia," lies to my mother.
Now go vote.
