In case you haven't been following (and why would you, since American media is mostly ignoring the story) the Ukraine is about to explode.
BBC coverage here.
The Russian-backed candidate blatantly stole the election, and so far, of all world leaders, only Vladimir Putin (surprise!) has endorsed the results. Since most of the people in the country actually voted for the other guy, they're taking to the streets, hoping to force a situation like that of Georgia's almost exactly a year ago.
It's night, there, now, and it's freezing, but the protestors aren't going anywhere. If they can hold out and if the army either backs down or supports Yushchenko (the "liberal" pro-Western candidate) over Yanukovych (the Kremlin favorite), they just might win. For Europe, the West, and Ukraine, that would be a very positive step. For Putin, it would be another setback.
If Yanukovych sits tight, the protests could die out. They have before, after the murder of a Ukrainian journalist. This will make Putin happy, but virtually no one else will recognize or respect Yanukovych's legitimacy.
