Rep. John Murtha (A decorated Vietnam combat veteran who retired as a colonel after 37 years in the U.S. Marine Corps) says he wouldn't join the military now.
This is HUGE - he is very close to top brass, a constant supporter. And he was
THERE as a
volunteer. Will they rabidly jump on him, or just hide and hope this goes away? The last time they attacked Murtha the blowback was big. The response I suggest to the right wingers: Call for enlistment. See whether you can persuade anyone this is a fight worthy of ruining our military over.
I joined the USMC reserves in '82, thinking it possible we'd be fighting Russia to the finish. If they had called me up then to fight in an unrelated war to ... (why are we there again???) I don't know what I'd have done, probably serve, but I sure wouldn't have re-enlisted ever.
(I looked for Murtha tags and didn't see link, hope this is enough to make sure it hasn't been posted).
Update: Steve Gilliard mentions: Look, Murtha won a Bronze Star, was a drill instructor and was promoted from the ranks.
