The Democratic senators who are worried about their re-election chances need to know that we will be behind them if they filibuster. Harry Reid will be able to decide who needs money most. Therefore:

Dear Senator Reid:
I hereby pledge to donate to the DSCC if there is a Democratic filibuster of the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States that ends either in the defeat of the nomination or the removal of the possibility of filibuster by the Republican caucus.

My dollar pledge below.

Add your names and pledge amounts in the comments and recommend so others will be able to do the same. If this takes off (reaches over $1,000), I'll send the link to Senator Reid and the other Democratic senators.

Shaughan Lavine $100

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

  •  My pledge $100 (none)
    Filibuster, How to:

First : Call the three Democrats (Mary Landrieu, Ken Salazar, and Dianne Feinstein) who oppose Alito but also said they oppose a filibuster. We must persuade them that a vote against Alito is meaningless if they don't support a filibuster. Senator Salazar (D-CO) 202-224-5852 Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) 202-224-5824 Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) 202-224-3841

Second : Call your own Democratic Senator: 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number in your phone book or here: http://capwiz.com/...

Third : Unbelievably, three Democrats (Ben Nelson, Tim Johnson and Robert Byrd) support Alito! Tell them to either support filibuster or at least "don't get in the way." Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) 202-224-6551 Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) 202-224-3954 Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) 202-224-5842
888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number in your phone book or here: http://capwiz.com/...

Fourth: Call the "Red State" Democrats: (Message same as above -- "No" is meaningless) Tom Carper (DE)
    Kent Conrad (ND)
    Byron Dorgan (ND)
Blanche Lincoln (AR) Mark Pryor (AR)

Fifth : Call these "Blue State" and pro-choice Republicans: (Message: A "Unitary Executive" is dangerous to balance of powers--please do not get in the way of a filibuster.) Lincoln Chafee (RI)
    Susan Collins (ME)
    Lisa Murkowsky (AK)
    Bob Smith (OR)
    Olympia Snowe (ME)
    Ted Stevens (AK)

For extra credit, call all of the 2008 Presidential candidates who are sitting Senators--Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Russ Feingold, and John Kerry--and tell them to either LEAD THE FILIBUSTER or KISS YOUR SUPPORT GOODBYE. 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641. If you can't get through, look up the Senator's District Office number in your phone book or here: http://capwiz.com/...

You can also send that message to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (202-224-2447) and the Democratic National Committee (202-863-8000).
Polls and public opinion are another way to apply pressure -- get word out about why Alito needs to be filibustered:

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. (Click here)

People for the American Way has collected nearly 65,000 signatures to send to the Senate, please add yours: Save the Court Petition

John Kerry has endorsed this anti-Alito petition, signers' names will be read into the Congressional Record:http://www.johnkerry.com/...

  •  Great Idea! (none)
I can get behind something like this.  Harry got some money from me for the closed senate session back in October.

    So, here goes.

    Dear Senator Reid:
I hereby pledge to donate $50.00 to the DSCC if there is a Democratic filibuster of the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States that ends either in the defeat of the nomination or the removal of the possibility of filibuster by the Republican caucus.

    Signed,

  •  DSCC Has ZERO Ability to Influence Votes (none)
Harry Reid isn't the chair of the DSCC, Chuck Schumer is.

Other than Ben Nelson, the DSCC is unlikely to be significantly involved in any race involving a Democratic incumbent, so witholding money from the DSCC because of this would just hurt challengers to Repub or open seats.

    This is a bad idea.

    •  Not withholding money: Donating money. (none)
There is no threat of withholding money. The pledge is to donate money. Doesn't the DSCC donate to incumbents when they are in trouble? From the DSCC site: "providing campaign funds for tight races." That is what I had in mind when I picked them. I addressed this to Reid not because he chairs the DSCC, but because he will be instrumental in organizing a filibuster. What organization would you suggest?

      •  KEEP PLEDGING EVERYBODY!!! (none)
We're already in for conspiracy and bribery of public officials ... but I'm not sure we've hit the felony level yet.

I've got a '4' for the first poster who gets this response back from Reid: "You sonofabitch! You're trying to bribe me!!!"

        •  Bribery (none)
The money goes to DSCC, not to any particular Senator. Schumer is chair of the DSCC, but Reid in charge of trying to put together a filibuster. Neither of them is in a tight election, so they won't get any money. Besides, the amount of money is small—this isn't a substantial inducement, just a bellwether of how the base will react if the senate Dems pull off a filibuster. It is intended to show red-state Dems that we'll be there for them if they take the chance on filibustering, not a payment for a vote.
          •  This is bribery, and conspiracy (none)
... and it's a serious matter. You are explicit proffering a cash contribution in exchange for a specific legislative act. (Doens't matter that it's not "his" committee".)

Take a page out of Judy's book and get a link to this into a few more diaries.  It's a good idea.
