I've known global warming was real for a long time now, but I always accepted the "official" line that it was gradual. Sure, the earth's climate would change, but it would happen so slowly that I wouldn't notice the changes. My grandkids, maybe, but not me.
I've changed my mind. Global warming is now.
The Oil Drum has an excellent article called
"Dangerous Anthropogenic Interference" tonight. It argues, convincingly, that global warming is affecting Atlantic hurricanes now.
And the news was full of weather stories today. The BBC thinks New Orleans could be the first of many cities lost to global warming. And next hurricane season could be worse than the last one was. U.S. government meteorologists say we have entered a La Nina phase - which means increased hurricane activity. Bouys in the Gulf of Mexico measured temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s today. Temps as low as 82 can support hurricane formation.
Our unusually warm winter is a blessing now, given the price of oil and natural gas this year. But we may pay for it once hurricane season starts.
