I just got mail from the Union of Concerned Scientists (folks who seem to always be watching out for important, but less high-profile issues) regarding
HR 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act."
In a nutshell, this bill would create uniformity in food labeling requirements across the country by forcing lowest common denominator standards on all states. Stricter requirements in 30 states would be swept away.
As someone whose family relies on strict labeling requirements due to food allergies (both my wife and son have epi-pen level food allergies), this bill directly threatens my family's safety. Make no mistake, there is no way this is a pro-consumer bill. It is a food industry boot-licking bill. Fortunately, the UCS has made it easy to send e-mail to your representative, asking them to oppose this legislation.
