In what I'm sure everyone that's watched Babylon 5 knows, the plot was pretty scarily accurate, depicting a dictator siezing control of Earth and slowly turning the entire thing into a fascist state.
Early in season 3, in an episode called "Voices of Authority", Captian Sheridan, our hero, is having dinner with Julie Musante, the newly-arrived "Political Officer" from EarthGov, who is there to "help out" the captain in politically-charged situations.
I've transcribed the scene for your perusal:
Sheridan: So right now, we're in the lull between storms. Unless they're stopped, the Centauri will just keep moving in on the Leauge of Non-Aligned Worlds.
Musante: Well, I'm sure that's the rumor. But you know how rumors are. Earth would never ally itself with a government bent on war.
Sheridan: Yes, but we have signed a treaty with the Centauri.
Musante: Exactly. Which proves my point. Mm, these noodles are wonderful. Do you want some?
Sheridan: No.
Musante: This is just the sort of thing I was trying to explain earlier. Allright, so you have some concerns. But there are ways of expressing these concerns which won't cause problems for our leaders back home. Is that soy sauce?
Sheridan, handing it to her: Yeah.
Musante: Well, enough about politics. So, how are things here on the station?
Sheridan: Fine, fine. Status quo. Ah, we have had some problems with lurkers, but--
Musante: Lurkers?
Sheridan: It's our version.. of the homeless. In many ways, we have the same problem Earth does.
Musante: Earth doesn't have homeless.
Sheridan: Excuse me?
Musante: We don't have the problem.
Musante: Yes, there are some.. displaced.. people. Here and there. But, (sigh) they've chosen to be in that position! They're either lazy, or criminal, or mentally unstable.
Sheridan: They can't get a job.
Musante: EarthGov has promised a job to anybody that wants one. So, if someone doesn't have a job, they must not want one.
Sheridan: Poverty?
Musante: Hmm, yeah, it's the same.
Sheridan: Crime?
Musante: Yes. There is some, but it's ALL caused by the mentally unstable. And we've just instituted correctional centers to filter them out at an early age.
Sheridan: Prejudice?
Musante: Nope. We're just one big happy planet. Well, allright, there's the Marsies, but that won't change until they stop fighting the EarthGov rule.
Sheridan: And.. when exactly did all this happen?
Musante: When we re-wrote the dictionary.
Musante: Captain, you're a good man, you're a fine soldier, a leader. You understand that sometimes before you can deal with a problem, you have to ..redfine it.
Sheridan: But you can't deal with problems by pretending they don't exist.
Musante: There's no need to embarass our leaders by pointing out the flaws in our society that they're aware of and dealing with in their own way. Some people just enjoy finding fault with our leaders. They're anarchists, they're troublemakers, or simply just unpatriotic. None of which describes you. And do you want people thinking otherwise? These are the areas I will help you with...
