Hi folks,
I'm happy the recent NPR poll finds the Repugs losing on all security issues save for one. (thanks to Pachacutec at fdl for the heads-up in an excellent post.)
I'm scared about the one security issue where the Repugs win:
The "only exception" in the NPR poll where the Repugs "have a narrow 5 point advantage" is:
"the nuclear threat in Iran".
Oh, shit.
Hi folks,

Errr... I'm not given to paranoia (as a practicing shrink, I'm reasonably certain my colleagues would have let me know of any diagnostic lacunae there)....
but that "only exception" - Iran - scares the crap out of me.
I'm thinking about the current PR blitz for "son of WMD" directed against Iran.
And I'm thinking about Seymour Hersh's New Yorker article from January '05:
[begin quote]
In my interviews over the past two months, I was given a much harsher view. The hawks in the Administration believe that it will soon become clear that the Europeans' negotiated approach cannot succeed, and that at that time the Administration will act. "We're not dealing with a set of National Security Council option papers here," the former high-level intelligence official told me. "They've already passed that wicket. It's not if we're going to do anything against Iran. They're doing it."

So who can stop the Boy Prince from attacking Iran? Who holds the power?
Oh yeah - Congress.
Sure.
On a practical level, our republic appears to have descended to the level on which the sole remaining obstacles to W's next war are the Joint Chiefs of the uniformed services.
I may be off base here, but I'm not sanguine that the same Joint Chiefs who were quaking in their boots about a cartoon (and all this time I thought they were indifferent to Muslim sensitivities. Who knew?
Oops - wrong cartoon - start again.)
Anyway, those brave Joint Chiefs - the ones who can't risk their careers and future corporate board opportunities by DEMANDING the Pentagon shift away from space war and new fighters in order to provide armor for the ground troops who are killed every fucking day in jury-rigged DIY "armored" humvees.
Those brave Joint Chiefs - the ones front and center at the State of the Union, with the servile grins and puppylike eagerness to crowd around the Boy Prince after he stumbled through his script....
The same State of the Union where the Imperial minions strode through the galleries and arrested those wearing clothing which defiled the halls of Congress with - horror of horrors - unpurchased political speech.
Thereby shredding the same Constitution the bemedalled Chiefs swore to uphold.
So I really hope I'm wrong about all of this.
Cause if the supine overseers of lethally negligent occupation planning, torture, contractual kleptocracy, and the destruction of the Constitution otherwise known as the Joint Chiefs are all that stands between us and W's next illegal war ....
We and the rest of the planet are in for a world of hurt.
