Dear ----------- usa,(from an email copy)
Karl Rove and operatives of the national Republican Party have recruited their hand-picked candidate to oppose me for re-election: a wealthy scion and media magnate named John Raese.
Mr. Raese has the ability to finance months of televised advertisements. "I can assure the people of West Virginia," Raese said, "that I have enough money to put my message across."
Indeed, he does - and his entry into the race virtually guarantees that the West Virginia campaign will be very expensive and will generate national attention.
Having mounted well-funded races for Governor and Senate, Mr. Raese is no stranger to the campaign trail. And now, he has the advantage to reach into his own deep pockets to fund ads that will supplement the attacks already leveled against me by the Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican party.

In order to wage a strong campaign, I need the support of friends like you, who are devoted to our values - and are unafraid of the big money of Karl Rove and his friends.
I will not flinch in upholding the Constitution of the United States against the imperial ambitions of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, who spy on American citizens and apparently believe the law of the land places no restraint upon executive powers.
With your support, I can continue to serve in the Senate and provide a sorely needed voice for the Constitution and our system of checks and balances. That is why I am asking you to contribute immediately. We are accepting $25, $50, $100 or more. Whatever you can give is greatly appreciated.

Now is the time to fight back against the constant attacks on our Constitution. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Robert C. Byrd
United States Senator
