Last Monday I called my senators (Kerry and Kennedy) about the censure motion, asking them for their support. Kerry's office gave a positive response, Kennedy's gave me the "senator needs an investigation before he will do anything" response.
That's changed!
I went down to Kennedy's office in Boston yesterday. The receptionist looked slightly shocked at actually having a constituent show up to talk about an issue. The poor intern who got roped into talking to me looked slightly panicked and extremely frazzled. She said she had personally taken 20 calls on the matter (at about noon). Only one was anti-censure.
She gave me the "Senator has not released an official statement, still deciding..." and "an investigation may be needed before the Senator commits," but was very unsure. When I gave the "Bush has admitted he has broken the law, what needs to be investigated?" response, she gave me a blank look. She basically admitted that she couldn't "get inside the senator's head" and had no concrete answers or reasons. Basically all the aides were waiting for a decision.
Kennedy has gone from "investigation now, investigation tomorrow, investigation forever!" to "ummm I don't know yet..."
I have to believe that the phone calls are helping. And I think that actually showing up in person had an effect. Please consider calling as soon as you can, and going in person if you are within easy commuting distance of your senator's local office. It really does help.
