"ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said the government has agreed to comply with the court's order to turn over the images and the government will authenticate photos from Salon.com in its possession, and any of the 74 photos it has that are not on Salon.com will be turned over."
The story in on the UPI wire, no details yet on the reasoning behing the release.
I'm quite sure that Karen Hughes, our Ambassador of Goodwill to the Middle East, will have a brilliant explanation for all of this soon, how great our efforts at Democracy and Decency have been on those savage terrorists. Right.
I'll try to update it during the day as I learn more. Right now all we know is that the videos are going to be released. Jesus save us.
UPDATE 0709.51 PST: Salon now has their story up, thank you lmd71. I got in without the Site Pass, but most should have to sit through an ad to see the story.
UPDATE 1012.24 PST:
The
ACLU now has their press release up.
UPDATE 1226.11 PST:
Extremely relevant comment from reader JVictor:
"Jonathan Marks, a bioethics lawyer who has written several articles and a NYT op-ed piece on US abuses of detainees, told me that he has interviewed lawyers who have seen the Abu Ghraib CD-rom handed over to military investigators: there are THOUSANDS of images, some documenting abuse, others "simply" pornographic. dKos readers may also recall reports of a recording of a screaming boy being raped by Iraqi detainees: this file is not at Salon.com and if not released by DOD, it will provide clear evidence that materials are still being withheld. And as someone else here noted, the videos thus far released have no audio."
Diary title updated.
