Much like the test of the "MOAB" leading up to the Iraq invasion, this sounds more like psy-ops than a test of a useable weapon. After all, how would we transport a 700-ton bomb? Regardless, the parallels to late 2002/early 2003 are starting to make me very concerned about the Neocon loonies and their plans for Iran.
"The U.S. military plans to detonate a 700 ton explosive charge in a test called 'Divine Strake' that will send a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas, a senior defense official said March 30."
[snip]
"Tegnelia said the test was part of a U.S. effort to develop weapons capable of destroying deeply-buried bunkers housing nuclear, chemical or biological weapons."

Obviously, the allusion in the second part is to Iran's nuclear program, which is reported to be dispersed throughout the country with most facilities protected in deep underground bunkers. But do you think this flight of fantasy actually threatens the Iranians? I suppose the Pentagon feels this could give the U.S. leverage for a peaceful resolution to the Iran confrontation, but couldn't they have chosen a more reasonable fantasy weapon? I don't know...maybe a 680-ton bomb?
Have they totally gone off the deep end to think the next step up from the MOAB is 1.4 million pounds of explosives?
