Did your paper run this Cal Thomas column about
"liberal media bias"? If it did, consider writing a letter to your editor, like I did--under the fold.
Dear Editor (Columbus Dispatch)
Wednesday, April 5, you ran a column by Cal Thomas under the headline "Big Media bias is becoming more and more evident."
- In the interest of fairness, I think you could have added a note that Thomas works for a network (Fox) that last November paid a $14,000 per diem for an interview with Republican Congressman Tom DeLay.
- In the interest of fairness, before you run yet another "liberal media bias" column, you might run a column from someone who works at ANY news organization that paid ANY Democrat thousands of dollars for an interview.
- In the interest of fairness, before you again let yourself be bullied into portraying yourself as part of a "liberal media," perhaps give some thought to what "fairness" means.
- In the interest of fairness, may I suggest you take a look at Edward R. Murrow's reports from Buchenwald, and notice he did not feel the need to "give both sides." And, I suspect, if he were here today, he would not be playing "he said she said" with global warming; nor would he demand each report on Republican corruption be "balanced" with something bad about a Democrat; nor would he give space to anything written by Cal Thomas or anyone else from Fox News.
- And finally, in the interest of fairness, please consider this: Maybe fairness depends much more on striving for accuracy and truth, than for neutrality.
