This list, albeit very short list, of touchscreen anomalies is derived from the Election Incident Reporting System, a division of VerifiedVoting.org.
This is just one of the many anomalies that were reported to the EIRS during the 2004 election. This batch consists mostly of "vote flipping" in Florida.

She had to select presidential choice 2x before correct choice was reflected. Got help from poll worker; successfully voted. Voted Bush, Kerry got highlighted.
There is a real problem with electronic voting. The problem is not necessarily that they are tampered, but that they can be tampered with. The election process already has flaws built into it. It relies on machines to count votes, it relies on people to understand what they are doing and intentionally cast their vote for the candidate they choose to vote for. It also, and we saw this in 2000, may rely on human judgement to determine the original intent of the voter. It's an imperfect system. Removing the "receipt" from the process makes it even shakier.
Support legislation in your state to require all votes be verified.
