Thank you, Stephen Colbert. Thank you for saying what tens of millions of Americans are thinking every single day, but do not have to voice to say. Thank you for speaking the truth to our new King George, even though he was only feet away from you - it took great courage to say that Bush stands on rubble, and aircraft carriers and in flooded squares, never missing an opportunity for a photo-op. And thank you for pointing out the "courage" it takes the Generals to send men into battle while looking at a computer screen. I think your words showed how clearly the press has been in Bush's pocket - when you told the press that they had been so good for the last 5 years, you spoke the truth.
The fear the press has of George W. Bush was palpable in that room - they were afraid to laugh and get the Boy-King angry. Tonight may have been the final nails in the coffin of this adminstration and the fallacy of the liberal press. And I thank you for it. You pointed out, most importantly of all I think, that the press has been Bush's puppets for 5 years. They reported his WMDs, his evil Al-Queda spies, all of his lies, all of his usurptions of our rights without much protest. Enough. You have called them on it. And they will skewer you. But I have one final thing to say to you:
I have never seen anyone speak so truthfully to this President. I have never heard of anyone willing to take him on. You didn't really even pretend to approve of him. You spoke for me. You spoke for many. We can never repay you for your courage, and your words. Even when those press whores sat there, silent, trying to quiet you with their disapproval, you kept on. You did not falter. Even when the only ones in that room who were with you were Helen Thomas, Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame, you continued. You spoke the truth to someone who desperately needed to hear it. And you spoke the truth to the press. You are brilliant. And brave.
Thank you.
P.S. - Love how you skewered Scalia with the same inoffensive salute he used on reporters. Brilliant!!!
