I am Barry Welsh and I am the Democratic Party Congressional Candidate for Indiana's 6th District.  We WON the nomination!

I was active in the blog world before entering the Congressional race last year, and the blog communities are a huge reason why we won yesterday.  THANK YOU!

We have some problems with machines in this district, and the final totals are still not available, but we have much to be excited about.  Please see below.

Some Comments from others, then we will look at the numbers.

Democratic Candidate for Indiana's 6th Congressional District, Barry Welsh, has won a decisive primary victory, winning over 70% of the votes cast.  Welsh now looks forward to challenging incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Pence.

These Primary results show that Barry Welsh is a serious contender in the November race with Representative Mike Pence. With most precincts reporting, this year's Democratic challengers received a significantly higher per cent of the vote than Pence's challenger in the 2002 and 2004 primaries.  Democrats showed confidence in Welsh's candidacy and are going into the general election highly motivated for change. With polls indicating that independent voters are heavily favoring Democratic candidates this year, Barry Welsh is well-positioned for his race against Mike Pence.

With no or incomplete results from five Counties still remaining to be reported, the Democratic Congressional candidates are at 76% of Pence's vote in this Primary, as compared with 53% in the last off-year primary election (2002).  Given that most of the competive races were on the Republican side, this is an astonishing showing for Democrats, and places Barry Welsh in a very strong position going into the General Election.

First, the vote count so far.  Democratic Candidates have roughly 33,000 votes so far of the total cast, with more to come. (One county the machines counted the Republican votes, but not the Democratic votes. One county the machines counted votes in elections for NO Challenger. And there are more problems so a final count might be a long time coming.)
But as it stands right now, it is roughly 33,000 Dem votes to 58,000 Republican votes.
About 15% of those Republican votes were for Pence's OPPONENT, protest votes, and they will stay home, not vote, or vote for us.  The 33,000 Dem votes thus far are an INCREASE over the 2002 vote total of 29,450 Dem, again, with more Dem votes to count.   If you take away the votes against Pence, it is a lot closer than anyone ever thought it could be, and we are just starting!

More Dems have come to the polls in this district in this primary than in the last off year, and by the way, the Dem total in 2004 was 31,000 plus, so we have more than in the last Presidential Primary.  How many Districts has this happened in?

Congressman Mike Pence has figured this out, regardless of what the "experts" read into all of this.  He challenged ME to a series of debates in the fall last night through the Muncie Star Press, with each of us picking topics. Anyone that knows Pence, knows this is not his usual strategy.

Second, we did this without State or National Party Support.  They did not work against us, but they did not make this happen.

Third, we did this with the netroots, the grassroots, and the hard work of a handful of people.

Forth, we did this with just under $10,000 cash.  Every thing else was Payment in Kind, and me paying my own expenses.  We had support from one PAC, Senator Russ Feingold's Progressive Patriot PAC, and everything else was from small donors and county parties, and the majority of those small donors came from the net communities.  This is a district that has been devistated by economics and there are 17,000 more families living in poverty than in 2000!  There is not much extra money in this district.

Fifth, we are starting all over again today, and working even harder until November and victory, because it can happen.  Check the numbers not the dollars.  We do need dollars, and we need serious dollars to compete.  You can help with that by contacting the DCCC and telling them what is happening here in the 6th of Indiana, you can go to DFA and recommend our campaign, you can host a kos virtual house party fundraiser, you can do many things to continue to help even though you might not be here to vote.  I am just the Candidate, You are ALL the Campaign.   Like it or not, Like me or not, I am doing this for every American, and every human on Earth.

Finally, there are 242,000 Non primary voters in this district.  80% of those polled say they are voting Democratic for Congress in 2006.  This is Not A Lost Cause we are mounting, it is the beginning of The New America!  One door at a time.

Thank you all for all that you have done, and it is not time to stop supporting, it is time to double our efforts!

May God Have Mercy or America
And May Blessings be on Each of You!

Barry Welsh Indiana 6th District Democratic Party Congressional Candidate

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Thank you for running.  I can't do much to make my area more progressive, so I need it to happen in other places.

Just sent you a bit of change.  It's not much--I got killed in taxes last month--but I hope it will help to send out some postcards or something!

I was so exited yesterday night after I got home from working the polls to see the votes mounting up and seeing you getting the nomination!

It's purely anecdotal, but there's a lot of people here who cast republican ballots in the primary because they liked the republican candidate for sheriff here in Madison County, and that was "the" thing they were voting on in the primary. I heard a lot of people promising to be back at the polls in November to "throw the bums out" and "make a change".

I talk you up every chance I get, and I hope that come November, you're the person representing me in Washington.

    •  I am humbled and honored to be your nominee! (0+ / 0-)

Thank you for your help, and I will be spending a lot of time in Madison county from now till November.
We have heard quite often from voters that they couldn't help in the primary because of a contested Republican Race, but they would be there for us in November.
      If true, we will win.

Thank you again, and if we see each other between now and November on the campaign trail, your identity here at DailyKos is safe with me.

It is great to know yet another kos member from the district.

Thanks for all of your work at the polls as well, that is an ultimate statement for your concern for democracy and should be held as such!

Our congressional primaries (TN) here aren't until August.  We had local primaries yesterday, August is local general and state/national primaries.

I wonder why ours are so late.

as the primaries unfold, and there are fewer of us that are going to get to keep up the fight, so a win in the general would indeed be revolutionary!

They know that the netroots can impact, and that is one reason for a rush to change the internet.  We have to fight that as well.

Were the machine problems in Allen County? The results seem unknown for Allen in the IN-3 race as well as your own.  Allen is a huge chunk of the vote in IN-3, including most of the Democratic votes.  Dekalb Co. got a few new machines for this election but then didn't report till this morning. They must have really worked well. ;)

Congratulations, Barry! I know you can win again in the fall!  Congratulate the Mrs. for me too, as the two of you are a fantastic team.

    •  There is some problem in Allen but uncertain (0+ / 0-)

as to what it is.  We still have nothing from them.  The problems seem to be in five of the counties, and one I know for sure will not have anything until tomorrow.  They are flying in a computer expert to try and find the votes in the machine.   One county seems to have only counted Republican votes.  Rather anxious to see what is up with that.

I know we can win in the fall too!
      Thank You

      •  All Votes Counted (0+ / 0-)

I believe it would be a good position for you to insist that all votes are counted in this election.  It would be good PR that you would care about all the votes in IN-3 not just that you were credited enough to win.  Follow through till all of them are counted.

Allen is still showing no totals for IN-3 and no totals for Allen for IN-6 as well as other counties in your area.

I had a soccer practice for my team of 9 & 10 year olds tonight and my assistant coach asked if I had heard anything about Allen counties votes yet.  He doesn't have internet access is why he was asking me.  He lived in Allen county for most of his life and all his relatives still live there...some in IN-6.  (Yes, I asked they are Democrats like he is. More Barry Welsh voters!) His brother called and told him that their votes hadn't been counted yet.  I told him I would try to find out more if he would make sure they all turn out to vote again in November as you would need them most then.

I passed on what you said about one county only having the Republican vote totals and he said they must have put out the wrong machines that those were suppose to be for November. ;)  I snickered but hope I won't be crying in November when it happens again.

  •  70%! Champagne time! n/t (0+ / 0-)
  •  Congratulations Barry, I google some (0+ / 0-)

articles late last night to see how you did and one of the articles said that the Indiana Democrats had until June 30th to find someone to run against Lugar.  Is this a possiblity?  It seems like having someone on the ticket against him would help lift all boats barring an embarrassing candidate.

    •  It is true that Democrats have until the end of (0+ / 0-)

June to slate a name for candidacy to run against Lugar.  The state convention is the first week of June and it would happen then.  Is it a real possibility?  I doubt it.  The thinking is, if Lugar isn't challenged then there is no real motivation for Republicans to come out in November.  If they are unhappy with their Congressman, they stay home.  If there is a challenge against Lugar, they come out.  That is the strategy.
With that said, there are some very talented Democratic Leaders who are not active in campaigns.
Former Democratic Party State Chair, and Secretary of State Joe Hogsett.  Former Lt. Governor Kathy Davis is a brilliant person.  There are many more, but they are my top two choices.

I am hoping that Joel Miller will run against Sec of State Todd Rokita and fix Indiana's election problems.

  •  Congrats Barry. (0+ / 0-)

Barry, First congratulations on the primary</strong<strong>>.(You got my vote!) I have to say I believe you have the Republicans worried. I was listening to the Greg Garrison show today on WIBC when he made mention of the Democratic power in Delaware County, and that those Republicans there needed to fight hard because the county Dems were well known to send numbskulls to Congress and the state house. Well I can't speak for all the people in Delaware county, But I can say I know alot of people in Delaware and Madison county who are tired of the republican nonsence,And are working to get Pence out of our hair. Pence makes no sence.
