Tericka Dye, a science teacher and volleyball coach for Reidland High School in Paducah, KY for the past two years, has been suspended for appearing in a 1995 porn film. The McCracken County school district has announced that she has been suspended with pay, and her contract will not be renewed.
Ms. Dye, who did not use her own name in the film, was apparently suffering from an untreated bipolar disorder at the time the film was made. She was also homeless and without employment.

Ms. Dye later joined the Army and served in a military police unit. She left the Army and went to college to become a teacher.
"Your presence in the classroom would cause a disruption to the educational process," McCracken County Schools Superintendent Tim Heller wrote in a letter to Dye. "I fear there would be less than a serious approach to schooling by students who viewed the video or know about it."
By KY law, non-tenured teachers (less than 4 years of continuous service in the same school district) can be fired for any reason as long as federal and state laws have not been violated. Ms. Dye underwent a background check administered by the Kentucky State Police before her employment began. There is nothing in the KY code of ethics for teachers regarding previous employment in the adult film industry, and her application for employment didn't ask. A woman of legal age appearing in an adult film obviously isn't illegal.
How Tericka Dye's involvement in the 1995 adult film came to the attention of school administrators is unclear.
The Kentucky Education Association has hired an attorney to represent Ms Dye, and may challenge the firing.
