OMG OMG OMG!!! I totally killed it!
I was going home to eat my classic tuna sub from Subway for lunch. As I got out of my car and turned to go into my building, something tugged at my subway bag from behind. I turned a little to see what it was and in my peripheral vision, I saw something long and gray latched onto my sack near my hand. There is a lot of snakes (and even some poisonous ones) in my area and I hate snakes, so I screamed, looked away, and took a swing at whatever it was with the rolled up newspaper in my other hand. I didn't even think I would hit it, but I did -- really hard. I heard it smack up against the side of my car and fall on the parking lot.
Then I looked down. It was a Great Blue Heron!
It was horrible! Its neck was bent in half and its wing twitched for a few seconds and then it was dead.
What am I supposed to do? It's dead. It's even a protected species! I totally killed a bird that's protected under the Migratory Bird Act! I didn't even think it was a bird... If it were a snake, even if I actually it it would have survived, but this poor little bird...
What do I do? I'm a criminal! I've never killed anything in my life! Should I get rid of it somehow? If I report it, will I get fined? I totally didn't mean to do it!
I wrapped it in a tarp from my trunk and brought it inside, but there's nothing I can do for it. It died almost instantly. Oh man oh man oh man...
