A Long Beach (CA) candidate for city council has hit upon an interesting
campaign event: an gallery show featuring local artists.
Brian Ulaszewski, a 2nd District City Council candidate, has rented space in KOOS, a non-profit arts center in his district. The reception coincides with Last Saturday, a monthly community street festival in Long Beach's East Village Arts District.
On the last saturday of every month, art galleries, coffee shops, boutique stores stay open late with food and live music to complement street closures and open-air art show. The event has grown in recent months and includes poetry readings, live bands, custom clothing manufacturing-while-you-wait, DJs, and street-side demonstrations by graffiti artists.
Brian Ulaszewski is running a grassroots campaign focusing on voter registation and energizing alientated constituents. He's attracted attention for blogging his campaign on MySpace and fullfilling campaign promises (like increasing parking spaces) while still campaigning.

Long Beach, California -- The reception for the 2D:2-D Art exhibition sponsored by Brian Ulaszewski, candidate for the City Council Second District, will take place Saturday, May 27th, from 6 to 10 pm at Koos Art Center at 530 East Broadway.
The purpose of the show is to call attention through the eyes of artists to the beauty, the issues, and the on-going environment that makes up the life of the Second District. Local artists working in a variety of two-dimensional media were invited to participate in this ground-breaking project.
Over twenty artists submitted more than forty works of art, ranging from the black and white photography of Doug Hawk featured in Black and White Long Beach to paintings by Jonathan Apgar and Jeff McMillian.
"I am very excited by the participation in this unorthodox campaign event," says Brian Ulaszewski. "The art in the exhibition shares the beauty of the Second District's diversity."
"I'm impressed with Brian Ulaszewski's commitment to both the arts and the neighborhoods of Long Beach," says Doug Hawk. "Events like this play an important role in building a profile for Long Beach as a city that embraces its artistic past, present and future in all of its forms."
