While I am personally a skeptic as to whether or not the administration executed the 9/11 attacks (this movie has a lot of factual inacuracies in it:
http://screwloosechange.blogspot.com/) I am concerned about what this lawsuit might do in terms of silencing dissent in general, and this is another instance of what I feel is an abuse of copyright laws in this country (I feel that our system should be overhauled so that the RIAA and the copyright holders of "Happy Birthday" can't sue the living shit out of you when you use their songs for trivial purposes.)
Anyway, the Naudet brothers, the two who captured the first plane hitting the North Tower on 9/11 (their's is the only footage of that incident, and has been used dozens of times by the MSM and other conspiracy websites, and they haven't been sued for it!) have sent a cease and desist letter to Dylan Avery, the guy in charge in making Loose Change.
They argue that the movie is in violation of:
-The Federal Latham Trademark Act (the Naudet bro.'s lawyer suggests that Avery is argueing that the Naudets have endorsed this conspiratorial viewpoint)
-They also argue that Avery knowingly committed infringement, and that he did it for profit (although he also gives aways copies of the DVD, and it can be viewed for free on Google Video:
http://video.google.com/... .....this will probably be removed in the next few days)
Whether or not Avery did anything wrong in the sphere of copyright, because the footage from the Naudet Bro's is key evidence to what happened on 9/11, I would say that Avery SHOULD have the right to use it. This is akin to having to ask permission or paying royalties to show footage of Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the Kennedy Assassination, or the Moon Landing. What this is, is essentially OWNERSHIP OF HISTORY. I also see a double standard in this, since I have seen other 9/11 Site use Naudet footage or pics and not get sued. The footage of the first plane has also been shown countless times in tv.
