Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle is reportedly testing out the waters for a 2008 run at the presidency. He's been driving out to Iowa and New Hampshire to "talk to the people" and see what kind of reaction he receives. And while there is a long way to go between driving a car around a couple states by yourself and launching a full-scale campaign, the question I pose is whether Daschle is a good candidate for Democrats in 2008.
We all know Tom Daschle from when he was the target of the Republican Party in the 2004 elections and before that as Senate Minority Leader. Republicans took him apart for Tom's tactics of delaying and stopping as much of the President's agenda as he possibly could. And being from a state that carries a very dark red hue (South Dakota), it took a lot of Republican attention to push him out by the slimist of margins.
Both these points bode well, as they show that he has the support of South Dakotans that are traditionally more conservative while also adamently opposing Bush and the Republican agenda that is sinking this country. However the fact that he did lose in 2004 means that he's been out of the nation's spotlight for two years, as well as showing that he can be beat. But then on the other hand Daschle has experience in the Air Force as an intelligence officer and a good voting record in both the House and the Senate, which might play well if Iraq and NSA wiretaps are still a major issue come 2008. So now I open it up to you, should we support Daschle? Or would Hillary, Gore, Edwards, or Warner be better bets at not only winning the election but putting our country back on track.
