Le Monde, France's newspaper of record (similar to the New York Times in many ways, including being generally slightly left of center, and sometimes having an ambiguous relationship with those in power) has published a full page article on YearlyKos which does a good job of explaining the convention its readers.
I am posting an image of the page, and translating a few paragraphs below.
Democratic hopes at the tip of the blog.
Full disclosure: I was in contact with the Washington correspondent of Le Monde before the convention, and it was I who suggested that she come to see YearlyKos.
UPDATE: Full translation previously provided: Kos Convention written up in Le Monde by paper tigress
The man who started it all wanders around the corridors of the convention in shorts and with a satisfied smile. In 2004, Markos Moulitsas was unknown. Today, he is seen as a kingmaker in the Democratic Party. His blog, DailyKos, has about 500,000 readers, i.e. more than all political magazines together. He has just published a book, "Crashing the Gate" where he excorciates the establishment. That does not prevent the political and media elite from coming in strength at his conference.
The conference has workshops (Behind enemy lines: how to respond to right wing media), parties offered by Democratic presidential wannabes and the Sunday office of the blogger "Pastor Dan". A real political convention.
A fighter, fiercely critical of both Republicans and weak Democrats, Markos was one of the first to be able to live off his blog, thanks to advetising. In 2005, he declared an income of $80,000. DailyKos has given birth to a new jargon, and to a generation, the "kossacks". Their democracy is quite brutal: for or against. Writers - there are tens of them ) write on the topic of their choice. Readers rate form 0 to 4. The best articles go to the front page.
There sometimes are "wars", like the one which opposed feminists to Markos about an ad in poor taste (they left). And drama, like the recent outing of the blogger "Armando", a business lawyer who has worked for a client hated by the left: Wal-Mart.
Five months from the mid term elections, party machines are trying to court them and listen to them. Howard Dean, the party boss, has set up an 8-person team to follow reactions on blogs. Senators Reid and Boxer came to testify about the "gratitude of the establishment". "Those that do not realise what you are doing are making a mistake", says NM Governor Richardson.
"It's a community which represents a democratisation of the public space", adds centrist presidential wannabee Warner after impressing the convention with a party on the 109th floor of the Stratosphere casino. "Old media" acknowledges their power, even if nobody knows yet what it is.
"Kossacks" raised $700,000 for the 2004 election (Moveon.org is able to raise the same sum in a day). But bloggers "do not want to be only cash machines, says novelist Mark Sumner, aka devilstower. We are also there to push ideas forward." And Markos is there to pull the party to the left. He thinks that Clinton's third way is obsolete or worse, that it is responsible for the current weakening of the left's position.
Hillary Clinton is the main absent senior figure. Ahead in polls, she pretexted a time constraint not to come, but Markos has already passed a message, via the WaPo, that her candidacy was "all but inevitable". Few supporters can be found among the rank and file. "My mother was a great friend of Betty Friedman (a feminist author), explains Newyorker Eve Gittelson [nyceve]. It hurts to think that I will not support a woman. But the media will destroy her, will talk about her marriage again. I don't want to go through this again." "She will be a great Cabinet member", sums up George Karayannis [Doolittle Sothere].
But for now, bloggers are enjoying the pleasure of finding out who they are. It's an all out "coming out". They have been corresponding via comments on the blog for months, without ever meeting. "Everybody thought I was an old banker", jokes Kathleen Tyson-Quah, a young woman who writes on strategic issues from London under the screenname "LondonYank".
There's more on the Lamont-Lieberman primary, presented as a test case of the power of the blogs, and the article concludes on the story of momster and her first recommended diary, with those words: "I will become a celebrity".
There is a second article on the page, an interview of Lakoff at the convention (link here: The left still has some way to go)
