A prominent ally of U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman urged Monday that Lieberman run for re-election as an independent and not trust his career to left-leaning Democratic primary voters in August.
John F. Droney Jr., a former Democratic state chairman who helped Lieberman unseat Republican Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. in 1988, said Lieberman should make his case for re-election to all voters in November.
"I think to be terrorized through the summer by an extremely small group of the Democratic Party, much less the voting population, is total insanity for a person who is a three-term senator," Droney said.

Dang, I feel bad. I had no idea that deciding I preferred a candidate other than the incumbent was considered terror. Poor Uncle Joe, I'm sorry. . .(actually, yeah, I am sort of sorry. At some point--and I'm not sure why--I liked Lieberman.)
On the other hand, I can't see why the guy is worried--he claims the group of insane persons is extremely small. If it's a minority, there's no need to fret, Mr. Droney!
It's worth noting that the story goes on to say that his "suggestion was not welcome by the Lieberman campaign.
The senator's staff has been trying to discourage speculation that Lieberman, who is more popular with Republicans and unaffiliated voters than Democrats, might run as an independent.
Speaking of terror attacks on the Democratic Mainstream, anyone in the Hartford area want an extra Lamont sign? I can't convince my neighbors to put any up. They all dislike Lieberman but aren't sure enough yet about Lamont. "Lieberman is okay except sometimes he seems to like Bush too much," one woman told me.
I did NOT say that's kind of like living in WWII Germany and saying some politician's okay except for his support of Hitler. Nuh uh. That wouldn't work around here. Too bad.
