Holy crap! I got a letter from Patrick Fitzgerald!
Dear Citizens:
I know many of you are very disappointed in the reports about Karl Rove not being indicted, and I do realize that my office has been very quiet on the matter. Well, I shall remain quiet on the matter, and you're just going to have to be okay with that, but I wanted to say a few things with you about the bigger picture here.
First of all, I have in no way indicated that my investigation is over, so there may or may not be more news to come. My first request is that you let us keep doing our job and be patient. Justice is never served by impatience, and on a case of this magnitude, the future of our country depends on our team acting with great care. I appreciate the faith that the people of this community have in me even if I am more than a little uncomfortable with the spotlight and some of the more ridiculous attention being directed at me. I'd like you to remember that my commitment and loyalty is to one thing: justice and the rule of law.
But I would like you also to remember that the work my colleagues and I are doing is but one small piece of the fight and the diligence that is required to keep our democracy and our society strong, and I think that the amount of attention being given to this case is disproportionate to the scale of the tasks our nation has in front of us. While I understand the interest, what I am investigating is one dangerous and significant yet small act by a small but powerful group of people, and the justice system is but one branch of our government.
I'd also like you to remember that the term of this presidency will eventually end. More elections are on the horizon. Voters in Virginia are casting votes as we speak in the primary election for US Senator and other offices. Candidates across the nation are speaking to citizens about issues that are important to them and people are considering the choice they will make in the November at the polls. Meanwhile many citizens do not even vote, and others displaced by the hurricanes are in danger of being disenfranchised.
Take what you see in me, the integrity and commitment to justice and the rule of law without regard for personal agenda, and be that change in all corners of our democracy. Be the integrity of the right to vote, the right to freedom of speech, the right to participate as citizens in the direction our country is going. We can't all be prosecutors or jurors or investigators, but we can all be voters, or candidates, or pollwatchers.
Use it or lose it. I can't do this alone.
Sincerely,
Patrick J Fitzgerald
US Attorney
