Number 10: Zack Space is not golfing buddies with Jack Abramoff and David Safavian.
Yesterday, David Safavian was convicted on four felony counts of lying and obstruction of justice. According to the Associated Press, these felony convictions stem from a "trip to Scotland with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Rep. Bob Ney, R-OH, and Ney's former chief of staff Neil Volz."
In particular, according to Paul Krawzak of Copley News, Safavian was found to have concealed his assistance to Jack Abramoff in a land deal and "making false statements to a Senate committee that investigated Abramoff's activities." According to prosecutors, the trip included private jet service, luxury hotel accommodations and $400 rounds of golf at the famed Old Course at St. Andrews.
Safavian's conviction is the first in the wide-ranging federal probe of Jack Abramoff. The trial included testimony about the Jack Abramoff funded trip to Scotland, which included Bob Ney. While Bob Ney continues to play the I am dumb and was duped by Abramoff card, this verdict shows that that excuse is not sufficient.
Commenting on the verdict, Zack Space's campaign manager Joe Shafer said the "verdict substantiates the credibility of Neil Volz as a witness. This is the same Neil Volz who was chief of staff to Bob Ney, was on the lavish golf trip to Scotland, and has pleaded guilty to conspiring with Jack Abramoff to influence Ney. Abramoff, Volz, and now Safavian... The dominoes continue to fall in Bob Ney's circle of corruption and influence-peddling."
Zack Space weighed in, saying: "Bob Ney has become a genuine Washington insider. His starring role in the culture of corruption comes at a high cost for working families. Big companies are getting tax breaks to send jobs overseas, families can't afford good health insurance, and gas prices continue to rise. We need a new day and a new way of doing the people's business in Congress. I believe we should ban contributions from lobbyists as well as other perks like gifts, trips and meals. It is the pledge I have made and will keep and push for once elected to Congress."
After yesterday's conviction, there is little doubt left that Bob Ney is what his former chief of staff Neil Volz called him during the trial, a "champion" of lobbyists.
If you are as tired as Zack Space is of politicians who think they are accountable to lobbyists, and not the people, contribute what you can TODAY!
