Wisconsin's campaign to defeat the civil unions and marriage ban is building unprecedented momentum through the summer months.
In preparation for filing day, Fair Wisconsin asked supporters to give $30 by June 30th to reach their goal of $30,000 in an online fundraising push. More than two days before the deadline, supporters had surpassed the goal and brought in over $36,000 solely through the online campaign. After raising the goal to $40,000, supporters again came through....hitting $42,530 as of this morning. Apparently there are plenty of Wisconsinites who believe Fair Wisconsin can actually win, and are willing to put money on it.
And keep in mind, this is just one online component. I for one am eager to see how the campaign's filing report looks. The buzz seems to be that Fair Wisconsin can really make some waves with this filing and really show some folks both in state and nationally that they've got the backing and the resources it's gonna take to win in Wisconsin. And I won't be surprised to see Fair Wisconsin right up there with the top statewide campaigns.
And speaking of momentum, four former governors of Wisconsin announced their strong opposition to the civil unions and marriage ban this week. Governors Patrick Lucey, Tony Earl, Lee Sherman Dreyfus, and Marty Schreiber issued a joint statement saying the ban would go against the "values of freedom and fairness that make Wisconsin great" and urged Wisconsinites to vote no.
Republican Governor Dreyfus joins the three Democratic governors in the announcement, again showing the broad nature of opposition to the ban in this state. Dreyfus was also the first governor in the country to sign an anti-discrimination law that included protection for gay and lesbian people.
There's not too many issues that can bring four ex-Wisconsin governors together in urging citizens to vote a certain way - but voting no on this amendment is an exception.
So, DailyKos, think Wisconsin can actually do it? I'm starting to believe it more and more every day.
