In one sense, I feel lucky that the Senator I shall pride myself on voting against (Rick Santorum) is so entirely dastardly that the choice is perfectly clear. However, Thanks to the Netroots, I am, along with quite a few others, highly concerned about the outcome of the CT Primary. While Senator Lieberman has not reached the plateau of "Santorum dastardliness," he is simply no longer worthy of his place in our party and therefore, for the good of the party, it should be clear to him that he should "graciously" step aside.
The times we all live in require swift and dramatic change. Further, there can be no safe haven for those who tread the middle ground for their own sake. For, if you look closely enough, you can see the edge of the great fissure, for which there is little chance of re-scaling once our nation has toppled over its side. In service of himself and his hidden loyalties the Senator is helping to steer us into the abyss. Seniority or no seniority, our needs have surpassed his abilities, thus, he must be taken out of the tapestry for the good of the party.
Despite all of the "IOU's" that are collected outside of the public eye, the purpose of Government is to perpetuate the greater good of the governed. And so, we must hold the Government to the same standards as we would those of our own segments of the society. While one may have done great deeds yesterday, she is still accountable for what she is expected to do today. Integrity is not a process of debit and reimbursement; rather, it is a process of itself. When it is clear that one of our Senators, however distinguished, has strayed from his or her primary function, said Senator should have the integrity to either take an objective look at his or her actions and correct them accordingly, or just plain step aside.
It's that simple.
Senator Lieberman has begun his quest to do the opposite. Sadly, we are all going to witness the swirling decline of the political process so that he may enjoy all of the frills inherent to Senatorial prestige. I curse him advance (on top of what's already been done) for what the Senator is going to do to our party.
Whether he realizes it or not, the good of our party and its influence on the greater good of the nation sternly calls for him to step aside. I can only hope that somewhere out there, one of his Democratic colleagues is drafting a letter urging him to look beyond Joe Lieberman and do what is right for the party and the nation.
It is time that our beloved party rids itself of the trappings of obsolete components.
Or, maybe not. . .
EDIT: P1 "Simply" to "Graciously" (like I said, I often repeat myself without noticing, or, did I already say that?)
